Errrmm Constipation

Good morning all,
I have been hovering and reading this forumn for a while - the information is fantastic.
I wonder if anyone can help with my problem of constipation. I have been following LCHF diet for months but have not lost any weight, in fact put on weight, but my main problem is that I cannot go.
I am type 1 and have been for 28 years, on insulin and metromin plus a variety of tablets - anti depresents, blood pressure tablets.
I am at least 5 stone overweight, at the moment I am lucky if I "go" once a week.
I want to lose weight but I understand if I eat carbohydrates I will need to inject insulin which will make me put weight on, but if I carry on with the LCHF it is just making me feel sluggish and horrible.
Any ideas of what I should do to lose weight would be amazing.
Thank you xx

Acai berry, maqui berry or both will cleanse the colon naturally, take out the rubbish so to speak and increase your metabolism which if you eat sensibly will lead to weight loss.
Vitastore on ebay do a combined supplement i can vouch for.

Once a week is not good Niggle and far from healthy, I would talk this over with your gp and hopefully they'll prescribe something to help with the constipation.

I do take Movicol to help but unless I overdose on it I cannot go. Thanks for the advice on the berry tabllets, are they definanety suitable for diabetics ? x

I cant honestly guarantee if they are for type 1 but for type 2 I'm walking proof

Do you eat enough veggies on your diet? Maybe you dont need any medication just a bit of fibre

Eating veggies like brocoli, cauli, cabbage are fairly good. Also, ensure that you have plenty of hot drinks.

Were you able to 'go' ok when you were eating a mixture of carb plus veg etc?

I'm wondering if, perhaps, some of the medication you're on is causing your constipation rather than the diet. Whenever I've been on antidepressants I've found I get constipated which isn't my normal pattern at all. On LCHF I'm regular as clockwork every day. I eat lettuce and tomato every day but only eat veg in the evening about twice a week. I think the secret is making sure you incorporate good fats in your diet every day ie, single cream, butter, fatty meats etc. Don't eat low fats if you're constipated.

I've been on antidepressants for years and before I started trying to lose weight I didn;t have a problem.
What sort of things do you all eat ? I am at work Mon - Fri from 0730 - 1700 so at the moment I have been having porridge with water for breakfast, lettuce and meat for lunch and then by the time I get home I am so bored/hungry of the days food I tend to binge.
How many carbs should I eat for maximum weight loss a day.

Sorry all these questions xx

I dont really know how many carbs i eat. I guess something between 50-80 (but there are days when i eat much more) i just try to reduce carb but not on any strict diet. I eat lots of veggies and thats my priority. Much more than 5 a day and I try to have veggies with every meal and these are the biggest part of my meal. I eat all the veggies available and make different combination like moussaka, baked cauli or broccoli, stir fry with just a bit of noodles, humous with celery sticks/carrots/cauli, salads, cooked green beans.
Try to eat for few days lots of veggies and im sure you will see the difference.

Okay this isn't going to be nice but its useful to know,
When you do manage to "go" Rapidly sinking stool can indicate that a person isn't eating enough fiber-rich foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, or drinking enough water. This stool is often dark because they have been sitting in the intestines for a prolonged time.
Fibre all the way for us diabetics:smile:

Intresting guys, thank you.

I do tend to pass very smelly bottom burps and when I do "go" it is gassy and dark

It sounds like that more veggies and salads is the way to go. Am I correct that I can eat freely foods that do not grow underground - by eating freely I mean I do not have to count the carbohydrate values ?

.. .. and Fybogel can be an enormous help if this is the case.
My GP tried me on those sachets and since then I've not looked back .. I've no need to anymore :D  8)

Plenty of water - at least 2 litres daily.

Natural live yoghurt, unsweetened. I soak a dessertspoon of flax seeds and stir that in. If you really must sweeten it, I use Splenda powder.

Stewed rhubarb - ditto the Splenda; eat with yoghurt.

Dark chocolate, the blacker the better. 90% proof if you can take it. You won't need much, just about one third of a bar.

All the above work for me. I eat very-low-carb, and don't expect to go every day - maybe every other, or every third. Give yourself time in the bathroom - take a book or a newspaper. Exercise can help.

If all else fails, I have a stiff Andrew's Liver Salts before bed. That is very rare.

This is quite a good thread, because it shows the diversity with regards to what makes one person 'go' and what makes another person 'go'.

I eat about 2 tomatoes and a handful of lettuce a day and have boiled veggies about twice a week. I drink tea and coffee with single cream rather than milk and I live mainly on protein like chicken, eggs, steak, fish. I really eat very little fibre yet I'm regular as clockwork every day. If I was to eat chocolate of any variety, I'd be constipated the following day. What works for me is the fat that I eat in my foods like cream and meat etc. The amount of butter and oil I use is miniscule. And yet since actually cutting DOWN on the fibre foods, I've returned to a normal pattern of elimination.

I think if we sit and think about what we've eaten every day, we find out what works for us and what doesn't. And the thing is ... what works for one ... may not work for another.

By eating more meat and eggs and by using cream in my coffee will one lose weight ? I cannot think of what I could eat for three meals aday
, are they any examples of daily food diaries you could post that will help me get started on this? Xx

Firstly, forget your usual idea of what constitutes 'a meal'. Make sure your fridge is well stocked with beef, pork chops, lamb chops, chicken, bacon, ham, corned beef, cheese and fish. And just EAT SIMPLE for a few days. Forget stews and casseroles and fancy meals for now and go back to basics.

Start with bacon, egg, black pud and tomatoes for a meal. Where you'd normally have a slice of bread with it, have an extra slice of bacon instead.

Make simple salads of lettuce, tomato, chopped egg/corned beef/ham/cheese or use those tubs of sandwich fillers like egg mayonnaise, corned beef mayo etc.

Grill chicken breasts and eat with whatever veggies you like.

Grill steak and eat with whatever veggies you like.

Instead of bread, try Jacobs Savoury crackers, they're lower in carbs and you can have them with full fat cheese spread, hard cheese, sandwich spreads. I have them for breakfast and as snacks if I run late for lunch.

Hi

Have just thought of something that will probably enable you to 'go' and that is for you to stop the porridge and replace it with bulgar wheat made into a porridge. This is fairly easy to do. Bulgar wheat is high in fibre and made me 'go' about 3 - 4 times per day and so I stopped eating it. Bulgar wheat is not that high in carb and resembles couscous in texture. Some of the larger supermarket chains will sell it but failing that, it can be bought in some of the larger Asian supermarkets under the name of Lapsi.

Eugh bulgar wheat porridge, mmm ok I will give it a go, is it made the same way with milk.or water ?
Thank you for the tips of filling my fridge with yummy meat and just eating it with no quarms at all. Is all veg bar root veg and potatoes ok to eat ? Oh my hubby is going to be peeved with me when he has to cook his own meal ha. Cold meats, lean only ?
Thank you everyone xxx

I'm sorry but i would go easy on the red meat.
Particularly if its of the processed variety such as a sandwich ham.
(many would argue to eliminate it completely from your diet if you are attempting to reverse type 2 diabetes).
