Hi folks and sorry to moan but I'm off to see my wonderful GP, (NOT), because i've got horrendous pain in both my shoulders (worst in the right one), its got to the point that i can't lift a cup up or open a door with my right arm, it just dangles down throbbing like mad. It's gradually got worse over the last six to eight weeks and i can't even sleep with it anymore and ordinary pain killers don't work at all. Haven't got a clue what it could be but it'll be interesting to see what my GP says, probably his normal "you're diabetic what do you expect."

Sorry to moan but i'm in so much pain that i needed to get it off my chest :( :( :(

Frozen shoulder????
Well known complication

That's funny (not really) I had a frozen shoulder about 6 years before diagnosis. Noticed Bernstein listed it as a complication. Took months of excruciating physio to get rid of it. Still not fully mobile.

Thanks for the replies folks, i've rung the diabetic clinic it's that bad and they said it sounds like a frozen shoulder. When i told them of the medication i'd been taking they said it was well adanced and that i needed to get some treatment ASAP. Thanks again for the support and i'll let you know how i get on Friday morning.

Another reason for the pain could be a trapped nerve in your shoulder, or neck. I have had this twice and went to physio therapy for it and it is caused by arthritis in my case. It can last a few weeks and is similar to getting sciatica except in the neck/shoulder and is very painful but they the doctors etc will be able to tell by your symptoms if it is this or a frozen shoulder. Since the last time a few years ago I cannot read or do anything involving bending my neck except for short periods because my neck and shoulders become stiff and painful so I love my computer because I can read the texts without bending my neck.

Hi folks, been to my wonderful GP this morning and he said "what do you expect you're diabetic, you will be ill from time to time." No different pain killers or even an examination on either shoulder. Off out tonight and i'm going to get as drunk as a skunk, i know it won't help but it'll make me forget about the pain for a while. :( :(

Sorry to moan again !!!!!!!!!!!

I think you have every reason to moan because that is not a good enough response from your GP. Can you ask for a second opinion?

Suggest you contact NHS direct & ask for the emergency Dr, or go to A & E.

Trouble is, we are told by the professionals that diabetes is progressive, so they expect us to keep complaining. And they expect to fob us off with platitudes & medication.

You need to see a consultant who can review you case fully. Keep asking & complaining.

I have been suffering this sort of pain for 3 weeks, and my G.P. has not mentioned that it could be attributable to Diabetes. I can see I need to do a lot of reading about the whole Diabetes thing and not trust to my doctor to give me info!

What if it isn't caused by diabetes? There are plenty of other reasons for chronic pain.

That answer is not acceptable.

Diabetes or no, you shouldnt have to 'put' up with it just because you have a diagnosis. What next, Doctor I have stage one renal disease- well what do you expect , you are diabetic

Its NOT ON.

2nd opinion and if no joy then a letter of complaint. If you didnt have diabetes, were losing time off work and in excruciating pain do you think the response would be the same?

Think we all know the answer to that

My G.P. actually said that at "my age" I could expect problems to occur. :? I have suffered from osteoarthritis for many years, and have in fact shrunk by 2inches over the past 3 years, so I am only too aware that there are many reasons for chronic pain, but I do feel the doctor should have pointed out that diabetes could be a problem! :o

Have you had a scan for thinning of the bones as this causes people to shrink when they have it in their spine? If a person has chronic back pain for 2 years and no cause if found a doctor should refer a person in their fifties and over for a scan.

Haven't had a scan, but after the last x-ray I was assured by the G.P. that he couldn't see any thinning, it was simply a matter of age, again what do you expect, and that it was likely to get worse! As I have so many other problems he seems to think that's the least of my worries, lol. I have just assumed that all the aches and pains I am experiencing are as a result of ageing, not that I'm that old , but I now seem to be reading that diabetes does come with its own pain problems  . Hazey, do you belong to a practice with several Gp's, and if so could you get an appointment when another doctor is on duty?

Hi and thanks for all the replies. I've managed to get to see another GP at my surgery, (mine was in India on holiday), and she said it is a frozen shoulder and it'svery bad, so i've been put on Tramasec for the pain and Decoflenac Sodium for the inflamation. If nothing else, because of the pain killers, i'm walking around like a zombie but it has numbed the pain. Ken, sorry but i'm garbage with computers so i don't know what you mean by "pm" you, sorry

I am glad you are getting it sorted out. My aunt had this several years ago and had the problem a long time. She ended up having a steroid injection at the site and this eased the pain a lot.
