Has anybody ever taken a large dose of either of these medications? (Overdosing/megadosing?) I'm not considering it, or advocating it, I'm just interested in finding out if anyone has taken more than their usually prescribed dose, and what the effects were.

As Sid says.....not recommended.

Anybody prescribed these drugs should always follow prescribing instructions to the letter and only increase a dose after discussion with their GP etc.

The medical advice is that anybody who overdoses on these drugs, as with many other drugs, should seek emergency medical attention........

Thanks - but I didn't ask if anyone had Googled it. I can do that myself. And I know what the recommended medical advice (always) is.

Maybe I should ring the hospital and tell them I've taken 10 instead of 2 - see what they say to that. My guess is "drink plenty of water".

Sid - nice link. Made me smile... :)

What happens if I overdose on Ezetimibe?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

An overdose of ezetimibe is not expected to produce life-threatening symptoms.

I don't think anybody on the Forum with any intelligence is stupid enough to overdose on prescription medication........ however, I suppose there is always a first for everything.

Any drug is usually safe, but even thinking about overdosing on something is a very strange idea.

Just because something is an effective drug doesn't mean that twice or three times as much is even better. The EMEA sets out safe levels for drugs and anybody who goes over that level does so at their peril. :(

In clinical studies, administration of ezetimibe, 50 mg/day, to 15 healthy subjects for up to 14 days, or 40 mg/day to 18 patients with primary hypercholesterolaemia for up to 56 days, was generally well tolerated. In animals, no toxicity was observed after single oral doses of 5,000 mg/kg of ezetimibe in rats and mice and 3,000 mg/kg in dogs.

A few cases of overdosage with 'Ezetrol' have been reported: most have not been associated with adverse experiences. Reported adverse experiences have not been serious. In the event of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be employed.

The effect doesn't have to be life threatening but it has effects which could possibly damage your health. There is not enough known about it at present.

Few cases of overdose with ezetimibe have been reported, but most were not associated with adverse effects. If you think you, or someone you care for, might have accidentally taken more than the recommended dose of ezetimibe or intentional overdose is suspected, contact your local hospital, GP or in the UK call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

Thanks Ken - that's actually pretty useful to me. Saved me a bit o' Googling. I'm only on 10mg daily, so it's good to know that 40mg is well tolerated in those with hi-chol.

Don't suppose you could find out the same info for Fenofibrate/Supralip, could ya?

Only anecdotal cases of fenofibrate overdosage have been received. In the majority of cases no overdose symptoms were reported.

No specific antidote is known. If an overdose is suspected, treat symptomatically and institute appropriate supportive measures as required. Fenofibrate cannot be eliminated by haemodialysis.

That's the appropriate info for Supralip again from the EMEA.

Adults: The recommended dose is one tablet containing 160 mg fenofibrate taken once daily

I'm sure it has happened by mistake to most people on insulin, though it does make you more careful in future!

I'm sure you are right HLW..........however this thread is about people deliberately taking more than the prescribed dose........NOT by mistake. Very different I would have thought .......
