Fasting blood test

I've had a call from my surgery to say I have to have a fasting blood test - what would this be in aid of? 3 weeks ago I had my first HbA1c test sent off at the hospital (no results yet), I had a finger prick HbA1c test last Monday at the hospital.

Am so fed up of the lack of communication and no-one wanting to take responsibility for me! Have booked to see my GP on Friday evening, so hope to get to the bottom once and for all of what all the tests have told them!
 
Think that the doctor would probably want a broad spectrum tests. You will have to fill about 4-5 small tubes. Cholesterol, liver function, hba1c and others. To give the doctor a view what's going on.
 
But I had all of those 2 weeks ago when I was taken to hospital by ambulance when they first diagnosed me!
 
Possibly some lack of communication between hospital and GP, or maybe GP just wants to make sure. Guess you will have to wait and see, but I do urge you to ask for print outs of all your test results. You are entitled to these, whether ordered by the hospital or your GP. Once you have your own copies in black and white you will have a better idea of what is happening.
 
Quite a few years ago my doctor said I was borderline diabetic, and that I should go and get my eyes tested.
I was getting a little fun up with lack of information etc, I said quite strongly, am I or am I not diabetic.
He said, ok, I will send you to the hospital then.
A few weeks later at hospital: A fasting test, which in my case was no food or drink after 10 the night before. They took blood then gave me a bottle of lucozade to drink. I had to wait 2 hours, then they took more blood.
Back at gp a couple of weeks later for the results.
Yes you are diabetic, type 2. Take these tablets.
That was as good as I got.

I hope your experience is better.

Thats just what I got.I was shocked.
Trinity welcome to the forum,you will now have support and guidence if you want it.
You will perhaps see a nurse once a year ,for blood results,and be told to eat carbs as I am afraid they dont seem to know any better.
Stick with the forum,we help each other.

What you had was an oral glucose tolerance test, an OGTT. Commonly known as.
It is used to see how your blood copes with an energy drink, 100% glucose.
It shows what happens to your blood glucose levels before and after, the readings and bloods taken are used to diagnose what meds to give you or not. The numbers show how you spike and how long to return to your hba1c level. Also other tests including c peptide will also be done if necessary.
 
Hi. Normally an HBa1C test together with the other usual blood tests will be completed by the Pathology lab within a few days. It sounds like either someone is sitting on the results or the GP does have them. A finger-prick HBa1C should have the result within an hour or so. Good that you are seeing your GP so do ask for all of your results as you have a right to them. The HBa1C test is far more reliable for a diabetes diagnosis than a fasting test so I wonder why the latter is being done? Do come back when you have the results if you need any guidance.
 
The finger prick test took 6min! 8.6%

I will try and tie down the doctor in Friday and get to the bottom of things! I was sent for a liver scan because of deranged liver tests at the hospital, but no-one will tell me anything else relating from that.

I would make a couple of notes, before going to see the gp, then hopefully I wouldn't come out and say to myself, blast I forgot to ask....

Our doctor will only discuss one thing, if you have two things wrong your surpose to make a double appointment. I think it's so wrong they are treating the symptoms, not the person.

Well the nurse said that my GP will have the results of the tests done this morning by Friday which is good, as the tests done in hospital have not been sent to my GP, no-one has any idea where they are, same with my liver scan results.

They didn't tell me I was expected to bring a urine sample (how I was meant to know I have no idea!), so have to go back tomorrow with that.

So going to kick up a fuss on Friday with the GP, how someone can be referred to a consultant and be refused access yet no-one else is provided access to my tests I have no idea!

My wife has the same problems with our local hospital. The consultant she sees annually now copies her directly as neither the hospital not the GPs systems can be relied upon.
