Fasting in morning of over 6 - am I diabetic

Hi guys

I've bought myself a blood glucose monitor recently and been testing my bloods 3 or 4 times a day.

Hospital consultant says i'm diabetic, my GP thinks I'm borderline and don't need treatment or any advice at all!

99% of morning I wake and test my blood (over 10 hours fasting) and it's always over 6.

2 hours after meals, even just eathing some chicken breast with mixed green salad it will be up over 9 and even 10.

Please help me, does anyone think I should go and argue with the doctor and give him all my results i've been taking?

I have already been going to the doctors for the last few months saying I'm weeing a lot, my skin is itchy and i'm just so tired, plus I have 2 grand parents who were diabetic and cousins who are.

I'm 42 yrs old.

Look forward to and appreciate any replies.

Thank you

P :)

Your +2 result after chicken and salad is high. I am definitely diabetic and my BG would be in the 4's to low 5's with that meal. My FBG is also in the 4's. So if I am a confirmed diabetic with those figures, perhaps another visit may not be a bad idea. :D

Good luck.

hi

Thanks for your reply.

Also when I wake in morning and it's over 6, I then have a glass of water and a small portion of oats muesli (health version no added sugar, portion only 35gms), with a table spoon of activia pouring yoghurt and my blood sugar after 2 hours is about 9.8

I don't know much but it seems high when levels on here saying people should be under 7.5

I'm a bit worried :( especially because my doctor seems so unsympathetic.

I'm not in the least surprised it's high after muesli. It tends to spike most diabetics quite badly. Try changing breakfast to a 2 egg omelete, or bacon and eggs, cold meat and cheese, Greek yogurt with berries. The difference in your +2 breakfast should be quite dramatic.

I'd insist on an HbA1c test which shows what your average blood glucose levels have been at over the past few months. it's different to the one you take with a meter, and can be pretty definitive.
Fasting BGs are inherently unreliable unless they are continually very high; they can show you are diabetic, but can't show for sure that you're not, particularly if you're on a good lowish carb diet. most of us on here would be declared "fine, no diabetes there" if we went for tests, but that's because of our diet. We are very much diabetic. Your two hour readings for the meals you eat are way too high. Take those results to the doc and insist on the HbA1c. If he says no, change doctor. And don't go too low carb before the HbA1c! That could end up showing "non-diabetic" whereas really you might be well comntrolled on your diet. just eat normal carby food for a few weeks before the test.

That's a good point Sheepy. If he eats low carb before an HbA1c he will come back as non diabetic. Duh me!

Hi Grazer

Yes I think that's what's happened with the GP results because i'd already starting being healthier and watching carbs because I suspected I was diabetic.

Maybe I need a few 'naughty' carbs and insist the GP repeats the tests.

I know when my sugar is high because I get a 'buzzy' feeling. That's how I describe it anyway.

Thank you

P :)

hi Defren

I thought the muesli would be healthy.

It's weird because i was on holiday last week and had hard boiled egg, cold meats and cheese for most breakfasts each day and felt much better in myself but I thought I was being unhealthy eating that.

Thanks for the advice.

No problem, glad to help. Insist on the HbA1c then when it's done low carb. Sorry for getting your gender wrong, but I know how it feels, loads of people thought I was a dude when I joined

Take care, and good luck, Joanna.

Hi. Does sound like you are a T2 based on your 2 hour readings; 10'ish is high. Don't bother with morning tests due to overnight liver dumps; just do the 2 hours after a main meal. I think you need to insist on an Hba1c or perhaps the usual glucose tolerance test etc. You could just do what my diabetes specialist GP did to diagnose me; he dipped a urine stick in a urine sample and is showed-up sugar :D

You have a bit of a mixture of results.More than 7.8 2 hrs after a meal could be considered diabetic, but for fasting blood tests non-diabetics are 6.1 or less, diabetics are 7.2 or more. The described physical symptoms mirror mine before I was diagnosed,as does the reluctance of your doctor to properly investigate the problem.Liver dumping can result in a high morning reading, however if it is excessive as in your case then based on my own experiences I would associate that with the diabetic condition.

You need an HbA1c test because you are either pre-diabetic or a well controlled by diet and exercise type 2 diabetic.I was in the same situation in that I was considered pre-diabetic for ages, but when I finally presented myself with a fasting blood level of 7.2,they were forced to do my first HbA1c test which came back over 8 ie diabetic.

Either way type Newcastle University Diet to reverse Type 2 diabetes into the search bar on this site or read Defrens posts in the weight loss section.Make your own mind up but you be at the ideal stage to try this.

Hi there,I would second what everyone has said about going back and asking for a HBA1C, although this is what threw my GPs etc off scent as I originally had a score of 5.7.My fastings were always high and post meals 8 -16. But I was already low carb and having many hypos which should have been common sense to them really. You mention itching, could this be thrush? Even if you are Glucose Intolerent, although your readings after meals sound diabetic you still need to know. Also it may be worth doing 3 days or so of monitoring, fasting, before and after meals, write them down and present back to your doctor.Good Luck and let us know xxx

Am I the only one disturbed by the GP over-riding the Consultant here?

Nope, I am equally worried Lucy. If it were me I would be phoning the Consultant and asking them to intervene. I have found that if I phone the hospital and ask to speak to the Consultants Secretary I can usually liaise through them to sort things out with my GP Surgery. Consultants, in my experience, do not take kindly to GPs over ruling them.

I think this is the third thread I've read today where gender has been mistaken, maybe its time to add those little 'male' 'female' symbols to our avatar area? :D ....just a thought.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your replies.

Yes i'm very concerned the GP isn't listening to the consultants advice, hence my joining here and getting points from you guys.

I did have some further scans on Saturday of my liver, gall bladder, spleen, pancreas and kidneys because my blood tests were a bit problematic. The radiologist said straight away there was something wrong with my liver. I don't know the full results yet until my GP receives them. I'm thinking fatty liver, in which case can't that be linked to diabetes?

My partner insists he is coming to see the GP with me for the results because he's fed up of the GP fobbing me off. My partner's son has had diabetes since he was 8 (now 20) so even my partner recognises the symptoms and he agrees with the consultant.

All I want is to feel well again. I fed up of being so tired.

Thanks for all your comments and help
