People, who do not stick by you in good times and bad.
Hi everybody,

I have been on the fasting diet for a while now and I was looking for some information.
My weight has stayed the same for three years now, my 15st 07lb. I have started fasting for longer now and I have a slight problem.
I fast for 22 hours out of every 24 7 days a week and only eat from 18:00 till 20:00. I am on Metformin and last thing at night my reading is 6.5 two hours after eating, when I wake in the morning my readings are 7/8 it's normally about that reading all day.
I have mobility problems and exercise is very hard. How can I bring my numbers down further?
My HbA1c is 55 it was 53 I don't find it hard fasting this long, however my doctor wants to put me on the next level up from Metformin. I really don't want any more tablets.
Has any one any help they can suggest? I feel as if I just have to look at a carbohydrate and my sugar levels rise??

Thanks

Purp

What do you usually eat in your one meal?
Hi Bulkbiker, let's take last night, I had bowl of vegetable home made soup, 1 large chicken breast, Roasted vegetables and broccoli stems. That was all I have had apart from coffee, with sweeteners. I know they are not good but coffee and water is all I drink in the 22hours.

Lots of root veg in the soup and roasted veg?

I try to eat as many vegetables grown above ground, unfortunately it does have carrots and onion in it.
The roast veg was beetroot, onions carrots. A few others but that's it, no cheating nothing.

I'm a one or 2 meal a day person but would try ditching the root veg completely and up the meat content of your meals for a week and see if you get better results? It may be that a lump of root veg carbs later at night isn't doing you so much good?
It would also be interesting to see what happens if you extend the fast for more than 22 hours to investigate if your bloods go lower after that.

Great,

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try and see how I go. I tried the meat before and my cholesterol went up to 7 I'm on tablets and it's 4.2 now. I think my lack of exercise is a big part of the problem however I'm not able to alter that.
I have kept my weight the same over the three years at the same level I have also lost a bit of weight since starting this longer fast. I'm going to up the fast a bit longer but I'll do that after a week of upping the meat contents and less of the root veg.

Thanks for the info!! Good luck with your journey.

You mean you are taking statins?
They have been known to push up blood sugars in some people.. as well as for most being pretty useless.
If you have never had a cardiac event then they probably aren't doing you any good (that is of course just my non medical opinion). I can point you at more info there is you like.
I'm not a great exerciser either.. walk the dog daily but that's about it for me.

Yeah my cholesterol was high and the doctor put me on them. I've been taking them for about a year. No heart attacks or anything (touch wood) I am quite prepared to stop them as I was thinking of doing that with all the info on them now anyway. I haven't had any side effects (that I know about) "perhaps my sugar levels though....

I'm not saying for sure that statins are the cause but they have been known to have that effect..
Up to you whether you take them of course as with all medication.
I have a little thread on cholesterol and statins that you might find informative (it may take a while to get through)

Out of interest how long have you been doing the 22hr fasts every day?

I’m wondering if the school of thought that variety helps and any one routine and the body adapts to it. A consideration might be to vary the length of the fasts to shorter and longer and the amount of food taken and possibly throw in a second meal occasionally. Mix it up, keep your body on its toes so it can’t adapt and settle. I’m pretty sure there’s a more scientific description of this available but can’t think of it for the life of me right now.

That's what Dr Fung and Megan Ramos from IDM suggest.. a bit of feast and fast to break up routine and keep your body guessing..

Hi
I have been doing the 22 hour fast every day now for about 5 weeks, I was on 8 then 16hrs then on the 22 I've been doing the fast on and of for as I say a boy 3 years it was to keep my weight down and its worked, however the blood sugar levels have slowly been creeping up.
You see I was wondering if after a while of this sometimes your body just stops producing insulin, and there is nothing you can do to stop it?? It runs in my family I have a few direct family and aunts and uncles all on the male side who are diabetic and like me it developed in middle age!! They have all ended up on insulin injections with poor control. I'm just trying to stop the rot, if it's possible.

Thanks

Yes I try to follow Dr fung and Megan. I even got the fasting tea from America in however it made me feel sick. Lol

It is possible to get your insulin production tested with either a c-peptide or a fasting insulin test which would at least show if you are over or under producing endogenous insulin. Whether your GP would be happy (or knowledgable enough) to order this for you is anther matter but it might be worth asking. If not it is possible to get it done privately but its not especially cheap.

Hi
That's something I'm going to ask him then. What does that show you is happening??

If you are over producing then you are "classic" Type 2 so fasting, ultra low carb should work quite well.

If you are under producing then you may not be T2 at all but may have problems with endogenous insulin production. This may change the treatment type and classification and you might to have insulin at some point in the future.

Woooow thanks for that information, I never knew about the blood tests.
It would make sense if I am actually under producing. I feel as if this is not making sense what's happening with me. As I said my blood sugars seem to just go thru the roof if I even smell carbs. If I eat bread my reading shoot up to 12/14. I don't eat bread, rice, potatoes, pasta or anything like that at all.
I just can't seem to get my levels down any further.

Thanks

My hba1c rose from 48 to 54 when I took statins so they may have something to do with it.
