Hi all

Just wondered which gives the best indication of good BG control:

fasting OR 2hrs after evening meal.

The reason I ask is that I generally have readings of 5. something 2 hrs after my evening meal ( if I've been good) however I rarely have a reading of under 7 first thing in the morning. I know this could be due to DP but no guarantees.

I had my best FBG of 5.5 on Tuesday morning after having eaten 3 slice dominos pizza and 4 slice chocolate birthday cake the night before :crazy: I know diabetes is not an exact science but this makes no sense.

I went to GP today to get forms signed and asked when next hba1c will be due as my last one was in Dec. I wasn't sure if it would be 3mthly, 6mthly or yearly. I've got an appointment for next Friday!!!!! :roll: That should be interesting as I tried really hard for my first post diagnosis hba1c but have since become quite complacent. In some ways I hope it gives me the shock I need but, for obvious reasons, I hope to get a good result.

Hi. I would trust the 2 hours after a meal test. First thing in the morning your liver may have done a glycogen dump overnight adding to your 'normal' blood glucose and therefore not a useful reading.

Even that's a bit dodgy for me. I find 3 hours after is best for me as i'm still high after 2. but then everyone's different... i agree the first thing in the mornings not a good one tho ...

I won't go into the actual risks but controlling both are important.
Someone can be diagnosed with diabetes with fasting levels of 7mmol/l and above, whether or not they have higher post prandial levels ( most people by the time they get to that level will also have high post food levels but there are a subset for whom rising fasting levels happens first.)

If you wake up with higher levels you may have been at a higher level for a short time, but it could have been many hours
Without testing you don't actually know when the rise begins.

I dont do fasting bloods now ,they were so erratic and there was no reason why they were high one day and lower the next I tried my best to work out why ,writing down what I had eaten the day before ,if I had exercised or not but nothing made sense so I gave in and now I just test after meals and this makes sense I feel that I am in control now .

@2hrs.

You need to worry about the things that you can control - namely your BG 2 hours after you eat - rather than those that you can't.

If you get you @2hours readings under control, the FBG will follow in time.

Thats what worked for me, I controlled my postprandial levels and everything else fell into place :thumbup:

I concur with the plus 2 hour readings, but they do different things. The +2 Hours tell you what you can and can't eat. The fasting BG is supposed to give you a general idea of the results of your diet in terms of control. Certainly, a very high fasting BG tells you that you're doing something wrong, but the +2 hours tells you exactly what. My view anyway.

I've been looking at my average BG score over the last 7 days as my indicator of how well I'm doing overall, this includes a test first thing every morning, and a 2hr test after most meals, although I'm no longer testing after meals I'm happy are safe for me. It also includes some 1hr and 3hr tests after meals if I think they may be faster or slower than average to digest along with a couple of post exercise tests.
