Anyone else feel like when there is something wrong with you it is automatically blamed on your diabetes.

I’ve been type one for 44years (I’m 46) and it’s been reasonably controlled. Never been in hospital due to it and my Hbc1 have always been in range. Don’t get me wrong, there are some days where my sugars rise and fall for no apparent reason but not for long.

Three years ago I discovered that I was stage 4 ckd by accident. No one had ever told me.
Both kidney tubes were partially blocked from endometriosis. After months of digging and questioning I discovered that my tubes had been blocked for at least the last 15 years. Even in my hysterectomy notes it says that both tubes were freed as they were attached to nodules.

Recently I’ve discovered that al my endo is back and even though I’m on my fourth kidney stent, my right kidney tube is it has now attached itself to a lump of endo that is also attached to my remaining ovary.

But according to my nephrologist and gp my kidney loss is purely down to my diabetes!!!!!!

Sorry for the rant.

Hi,

Sorry to read about your CKD.

The hashtag diabetes thing?

10 years ago I was surprised to be diagnosed with macula oedema. (But no retinopathy.)
The last couple of years or so, “oh yes Diabetic maculopathy.”

It started probably just after lockdown with a technician scanning my eyes using the term.
Then it appeared on the report letters or invites for check up scans…

Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
No need to apologise here at all...

Helps to have a rant when things are too much, agree it's always the only thing any professional will focus on first, heard it myself many times too...

Yes I often feel everything is blamed on diabetes.. and I don't think that should be the case.. I do however think many things are made worse by the diabetes as the body is now 'well' and takes more effort and time to heal

About 16 years ago I had this thing where if i moved my head quick, my vision would slant like I was on a violently rocking boat.
My legs would auto compensate & id hit the ground.
Getting up out of bed I had bruising where I’d hit the deck. At that time I was walking to work but certain tasks had me loosing it to?

I went to my GP about it & told him the problem. “Oh,” he responded. “You’re dia…..”
I pointed out that I know what a hypo is & further mor BG test didn’t confirm.

He then prescribed a course of antibiotics & advised I didn’t drive for 2 weeks..

It was as I guessed, an inner ear infection?

In my personal experience everything is blamed on diabetes but then the diabetes is my fault I was diagnosed at roughly 8 years old and have been on insulin from the start, the diabetes consultant continuously questions if that is my diagnosis and that I am on multiple jabs a day because my technique is wrong if I done it right I would only need 2 injections a day. I also find that treatments are also withdrawn due to the diabetes so I am unable to have a cyst removed internally because of my diabetes. It seems to be an easy way out for some unfortunately.

Very bewildered by that advice from your consultant, as that is advice that I wouldn't have expected to get post 1985.... I am wondering if your consultant is very elderly??? Or is misreading your records and thinks you are T2????

If you are in the UK I would be hunting for a different consultant as MDI (multiple daily injections) have been standard practice for T1s for decades. ( Hopefully you have access to tech such as continuous glucose sensors? )

Like you I was disgnosed aged 8 but I think I have been luckier than many posting on this thread, as most of the things I see my GP for haven't been put down to diabetes. (Though I think diabetes may make some conditions worse and/or more likely).

Getting a different consultant isnt straightforward. There is no legal right, I complained, it went to Ombudsman and I was compensated but asked for a second opinion. I'm still seeing the same consultant who tells me my diabetes issues are due to my behaviour
