The misinformation out there about diabetes and misunderstanding of difference between Type1 and 2 .
Absolutely fed up to teeth of diabetes and hypos and the whole lot that goes with it.
Type1 diabetes for 40 years , since i was 2. No complications thankfully yet. But the last few months my bloods seems to be all over the place. My last HBA1C was 53, before that 54 , before that 57.
I gave done DAFNE and it had been working , ratios were spot on , but it seems like my body is going through a lot of changes or hormones or something ( altho blood tests have been done and nothing showed up )
. All day today i have had 3 hypos , all yesterday i was catching them and adding cp s before it went below 4.0 . Im shattered now. Plan to reduce Levemir tonight , (DNS had told me last week to increase it ) . Just so sick of it. When you think you are on top of the whole thing , something new crops up and throws you off. Sorry for moaning but has anyone else experienced anything similar re insulin needs changing almost over night , without explanation ? Thanks

Sorry you're feeling down. I think most of us have days like that because diabetes is a pain and you can never just rely on everything being ok, which for me is the most wearing thing. It's a full time job almost, making sure all's going well.

I haven't had as sudden a change as you, but I do find my sensitivity to insulin seems to vary, and the same meal can give quite different results afterwards two days in a row.

Could it be hormonal? I've found I can have strange lows due to hormones.

Ya azure , Im sure it is , but my gp and diabetes team have done tests and say hormones are normal . Wonder are their specific tests i should request.

My insulin requirements change every so often. I've always put it down to "diabetes" and just got on with it (getting frustrated sometimes).

Ages ago I read that some diabetics find their insulin requirements changed with the seasons. I used to think that was nonsense, as we all need to make changes and I'd never noticed any pattern to it. Now I'm not so sure. I'm going to keep an eye on things with the changing seasons and work out if there is actually a pattern to my increases/decreases in insulin doses.

I've been having some hypos recently and am wondering if it's due to the cooler weather. I intend keeping note of any changes I make, to see if they do correspond in any way to the seasons. - Obviously that will take quite some time!

Thanks Dancer , half thought it might be the time going back Saturday night that made it run below target all day yesterday but didn't think of season change. Will keep a record too.

Oh yes I can fully dig this one !! I just seem to getting it right and it goes haywire, past few weeks it's really got me down, I can't get levels below 10 at the moment, am coming down with a cold and just found out my thyroid levels are low again so having to up my dosage of thyroxine, it's a never ending story. Also been turned down for pump even though I test regularly and try my hardest, still going to try again.

It's a deep breath each day and the belief that it will come right.. Eventually !!

I believe this too as it was the same time last year that I was really struggling and my DSN reminded me of this.

Yes my heart goes to you. I seem to find that every few months or so all my rates seem to inexplicably "reset" themselves. I use a pump and just when I've got my levels all together they seem to drop off and my insulin requirements seem to need adjusting. Often there doesn't seem to be any explanation to this. Possibly changes in season are part of this but I'm sure that's not the only reason.

I don't know if this is something that is maybe more prevalent in "long termers" but this is not something I remember happening years ago. You mention that you've been T1 for 40 years so that is a long time and maybe this causes more erratic behaviour in the body due to it being artificially supported for so long.

Yes Auckland Canary , never thought of that. At one stage over last couple of days i was convinced my body had started making insulin (i know well it cant )

Lowered Levemir last night and its running above target all day today aroud 10.0

No winning :) :)

It doesn't happen to everyone but the clocks changing affects me every 6 months. Seems to take my body best part of a week to adjust and get back on track.

Really John ? Great , strange thing is dont remember it affecting me so bad any other year. Thanks

For what it's worth, Louise, I'm a type 1 who is now menopausal. Before, when I had periods, the first day was unbearable. I'd be suicidal and my sugars would go really high, then plunge to really low as my period started.
Many doctors don't recognize that insulin is a hormone and as your body's hormones change, so does your reaction to insulin.
Might I recommend tracking your sugars during your period to see if you're having the same reaction each month? It may not change your doctor's mind, but at least you'll know what's going on and can adjust accordingly.
Good luck.

Raps , can i ask did you have your blood sugars going all over the place before menopause (feel free to ignore this if its too personal ) . Have never noticed big highs or lows in past .

Yes, but for me, that's really normal. The extreme highs and lows before my period were consistent, month over month, though.

Thanks everyone , feeling far more positive today :) Will take some tips tho
