This is the first time I have posted on Diabetes.co.uk and I am afraid I will not get any replies, but that doesn't matter as I wouldn't reply either!!
I have been a type 1 for 10 years now and for some reason I am feeling very fed up with it at the moment! I found it a breeze when I was diagnosed , the nurse came to inject me and I asked her if I could do it seeing as I would be doing it from when I got home. I swapped to a pump a few years ago, I work full time as a veterinary nurse, I have lots of animals at home to keep me busy including a horse. I go to a Zumba class once a week and enjoy walking my three Labrador's, so not a couch potato!
My glucose is always high at the moment , no matter what I do! I feel like I am trying so hard and getting no where at all. I have tested on a fasting section and it seems fine, then I add food that I know the carb value and take the amount of insulin I always have!! But massive glucose swings! and to top it off massive mood swings! I know the two are connected but I am hating myself and I am sure my husband is as well.
The other thing that could be affecting my moods is hormones, I had a hysterectomy at 23 years due to cancer but was left with my ovaries, could I be going though an early menopause and would this be affecting my glucose? I am 35 years old now.
Sorry to go on and on

Can't help I'm afraid but don't despair, someone will be able to help.
Just a thought, you haven't got the start of a cold or anything have you that might put your readings up?
Hope you get sorted soon

Hi CorrieDean, and welcome! :)

Someone always replies on here, and someone will be along soon who knows more than I do - I'm Type 2.

I do know, though, that menstrual hormones can affect blood glucose levels 'cos I googled it today for reasons of my own! You could be early menopause, I suppose, but you could also be peri-menopausal which can last a long time in some women - me included! But you can't be diagnosed without a simple blood test for the relevant hormones.

The best thing for you to do would be to raise this with your doctor or diabetic team, telling them just what you've said on here and explaining your worries. They are in the best position to help you, and will maybe even refer you to an endocrinologist - or you could ask to be referred.

You sound a bit depressed about it, but this forum will provide lots of support. Please do make the effort to talk to your doctor about it - there's lots of things they can do.

This time of year always gets me down, so I have a SAD lamp  It helps! We'll all be better for some sunshine :)

Hi Corrie,

Trying to control sugars is not an easy job thats for sure. I too have a dog and a horse that keeps me busy and I find my sugars tend to go up when I do loads of exercise! walk the dog, walk te horse ( he is a baby at the mo) and mucking out all tends to get the energy levels up! i find if my sugars are below 7 I am ok however if I am above 7 I struggle for the rest of the day.

Whats your insulin regime ie what insulin are you on?

Do you have a diabetes nurse that keeps in touch with you?

Also as you say if your going thru an early enopause this will affect your sugars I'm sure as when I have my monthlys thats it sugars are thru the roof and I am like a devil processed (double) :)

Hi Corrie Dean

If on a pump and your basal testing is ok, then there are basically two choices of what may be wrong.......you say you have always had the same carb ratio.......I would suggest that this needs adjusting.....also, depending in the time that you have programmed in to your pump for insulin working time, this may well need slightly adjusting.

If you're going high/low within 3 hours of eating then you need to adjust your carb ratio either up or down.

If you eat two meals too closely together (as I was doing with my breakfast and lunch initially) then this may too have a contribution towards levels going higher. I was eating at 9am and again at 12noon-only 3 hours apart for my bolus's, so this was affecting me, as my insulin working time was set to 4 hours I think....now I always try to have my main meals 5 hours apart, and my insulin working time is set to 5 hours too. This helped a lot.

Please don't feel fed up, it just needs working through. I had a hysterectomy 15 years ago and am currently 47, and so far (touchwood) I can't say that hormones are affecting me, however your GP could do a test easily to see what's happening with your hormones.

Personally, I ate a lot more during Christmas this year, and despite eating less for a month, it is taking time for my body to adjust back to the less food, and I have had to alter basals and bolus rates.

It is a blip only, if you have been okay for 3 years you will pull it back, no doubts about it. There are a number of things that could be affecting you, so I would ask GP to see if he/she could test hormone levels, but at the same time I would start off by looking at the timings of what you are eating, and your bolus ratio which may need adjusting. Best wishes....Sharon

Hi,

Didn't want to read and run. I think that your early menopaus is, as you suggest, the most liekly cause of your Bg issues. I am aware that it is not usual, as we get older that our insulin carb ration needs to be changed...especially when we under go changes like teh menopause etc. I have not gone through it yet, so can't speak from experience, but I know that my insulin requiremnst go up during certain times of the month, and changed enormously during pregnancy...so I would really not be surprised if menopause does something similar.

The thingthat that does surprise me is that it your basal rate seems unaffected...but then, this diabets lark never does what you think it should sometimes! persoanally, I would give your daibete nurse a call, and see if they have any advice.

Sure you will get back to "normal" soon..just as well, as you sounds like you are really busy with all the animals!
take care
