Ok - gonna vent my spleen a bit, nothing you havent heard a thousand or more times before:

Went for an appt with the nurse today for smear, HBA1c, weight, bp.

Won't bore you with the smear details  :P

Anyway, took weight and despite losing 21lbs since dec - not a word, no encouragement, no 'well done', nada.

Took blood and asked why I've come for HBA1c, told her cos 3 months since the last and doc said I'd get 3 months to try diet/exercise alone (hint to you honey - check my weight)

I then asked what did I weigh last time, just curious - she couldnt find it, i said 'don't matter, I know I've lost'

I guess I'm a bit needy and want someone to acknowledge how hard ive worked.  lol

Then asked about test strips AGAIN and showed her my lovely graph with the blips and what food had caused them , latest was beetroot on salad - now removed. She said the usual - not on insulin, not on meds yada yada yada. Told her how ridiculous it is, if I followed their outdated advice I would soon be able to have my strips free cos they would send me onto insulin.

To be fair she said it is down to cost, she kept her professional face on without condoning or condemning the NHS advice.

She said if I was under the hospital I would probably get them but the GP's wouldnt continue them cos of cost. With the exception of a retinopothy appt anything i've had done (2 HBA1c tests) have been arranged off my own back, I did also ask whether being psychic is a side affect i could look forward to as I've been told nothing by them. She didn't answer that one lol

Looking forward to my results next week and if they are not good and doc says meds, at least I can say hand on heart I tried my best and meds it must be.

AND if I do get the good result I'm expecting, if that nurse, gp or practise try to use MY data for their 'success' stats or stories I'll be bloody furious (though I'm sure I'll never know)
ok thanks

Feel better

lol Mary you are not alone, if it wasn't for this forum and the internet I would have gone crazy. I was told just after xmas that I had diabetes, then given the usual food list, had my feet and eyes checked etc etc. But nothing since, if we were stoopid we would just do away and get on with it, wouldn't we!!!
Well I care about my health, they have no idea how psychologically it affects us and I don't think they care.
However I do feel guilty (think we are meant to feel like that) that this is all free of charge, and I thank god I don't live in the states or anywhere else where you have to pay. Otherwise it would be a very different story, for me at least.

Vent all you like we all understand, oooo must get on with my sewing.

You are doing brilliantly Mary well done

Sound like you and me go to the same practice I had very similar experiences (obviously not the smear!). Wait till they offer to send you to see the specialist nurse she might shout and undermine all you've achieved for half and hour and then try and hasten your demise with her expert opinion.

If they want to use your data and results make sure to tell them its YOURS. To be honest if your surgery is anything like mine they weren't interested in it at all I may have just rolled it up and stuffed it where the sun don't shine to prove all that testing had sent me mad like she said it did.

Good luck

Doctors and nurses can't tell you well done when you achieve using a low carb diet and testing, as it goes against the 'party line'. It doesn't stop us from being able to say it though, so very well done on all you have achieved. I think you along with many others know you know the right way to deal with this, and not the NHS way. Keep going, it will only get up their noses to see you doing so well.

Well done for the weight loss Mary3. You should be well chuffed with yourself. Can't blame you for venting. You are doing everything positive despite lack of encouragement from unprofessional nurse. Keep up the good work.

Well done on doing so brilliantly Mary. I hope that HBA1C result rewards you for all your hard work

If it makes you feel better about treatment. I haven`t even had that test yet, so how they will know how, and if, it is better I will never know.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement, I don't know where I would have been without this forum.

Oh yes I do, up xxxx creek without a paddle

You are all brilliant

How gutting and annoying, can you get booked in off your own steam, so at least you have a baseline?

Unfortunately they only take any interest when you miss the targets. its mostly because they don't actually know anythibg about diabetes but they really should try to hide the fact that they don't care either!
My practice has a designated diabetes nurse but she never even bothers to read the notes and it is like starting from scratch each time I have to go there,

Just remeber the pracice is making a nice tidy profit from us. Do you really cost them £2000 per annum - I don't think so!.
Letting the nurses deal wih it all is another way of maximising profits, Grrr

I have to laugh at all the guff we are fed about our "diabetic team" . Who might that be?

Don't worry Mary . As you have already been told you are not alone. Non-diabetics won't understand bu we do. You are obviously doing very well and that is he important thing.

I get one in June. Do you think I might not be a diabetic by then ;)

Well, I had 3 baseline test at 10. something and two after the glucose weird stuff, the first 18, and the second 24.5. They will need to think on their feet to explain those numbers away

I was diagnosed 3 months ago at fasting level 12 I Was put on metformin 1 tablet by nurse (never seen a dr since diagnosis), and I have a diabetic clinic appointment at my surgery in 6 weeks time (the earliest they can manage) despite having my bloood test last week as asked. It should all have been April. I have had no foot check no eye check and have not been on any course despite being referred to Leicester Diabetic Clinic for their diabetic diet course (they have none at the moment). So if I had followed the leaflets advice I would think I would be up in the 20s by now! As it is I followed the advice here and I get readings of 6s 7s and 8s and the occasional baddie when I eat the wrong thing, I just accept that and do not eat it again. What a wonderful NHS service we have. God help the gullible ones. I had a discussion with one gouy who has had diabetes type 2 for 4 years and because he has urine test strips he didn't get up to the level of showing he does not bother anymore as he was told not to worry about it. He could not remember his readings. Is he happier than me. Oblivious would be a better way of putting it I think. I suggested he look up the latest info on here and not to get too shocked.

I would say it is a GOOD thing that you didn't get a place on the diabetic diet course and came here instead. A friend of mine was diagnosed fairly recently and is awaiting a place on a course. This worried me. I have sent him the advice from this forum given to the newly diagnosed , a booklet about G,I and arranged for him to be sent a meter and some strips.

I thought he should be forewarned sufficiently to make him at least a litle sceptical and in a position to ask some relevant questions.. His diabetes nurse who is also a dietitian has already assured him that a reading of 11 two hours after eating is absolutely fine,

A reading of 11 two hours after eating is well above the NICE guidelines, even  . What chance do people have when their HCPs display knowledge like that  .

To be fair to HCPs, they are not all like that, but it seems that very many who should know better, know nothing. My cousin works in a large practice in Leeds, and their DSN sounds to be excellent - her problem is getting her diabetic patients to come in for their regular checks. So many of them just will not come when asked. But wouldn't you think that would make her try even harder with the ones who DO respond and who try to help themselves?

Viv... at my local diabetes centre (at the hospital) the advice on the plasma screen in the reception room says to keep your +2 hour reading to below 12mmol/l!!
