Hi and welcome to the forum.

Most people react as you have done when a diagnosis is made but the more you learn about your diabetes then you will see that it is not a life sentence but a new chapter in your life that can be managed well and does not have to impact on your life in a negative way.
There are plenty of Type1s here that will help you so don't feel alone.

I got diagnosed on the 14th of jan 2014 and to be honest i felt like you for the first week but afterwards it just seems to be a part of your life whether you like it or not.

I'm sure you'll get used to it :)

Hi Cleggsta, sorry to hear of your diagnosis and as Catherine has said, shock is a very normal initial reaction. Has your nurse set you a fixed dose of insulin or is it varied ? It's all very new so I don't want to fill your head with loads of info but I promise you it gets easier and you can still enjoy a varied diet. When you get a chance, ask to be put down for a DAFNE course ( teaches you how to work out your insulin for different foods ). Until then, read lots of info here and if you have any specific questions, please ask. Lastly, have you been given a BG meter to test your glucose levels at home ? Take care, Mo

Hi Cleggsta.

Most of us have been there. It's really daunting at first. The thing to accept is that you now have diabetes for life. It's serious. Cry if you need to. Bottom line is you will adapt. It becomes a way of life. Over time you'll discover what works for you and what doesn't. Take it easy. Read as much as you can absorb on the forum. You'll soon find your way. It's life changing, but a lot if it for the better.

Take care.

Hi Cleggsta and welcome

As a T1 you can eat a normal balanced diet. The only thing you should avoid are very sweet foods, which is good advice for non diabetics too ;) although you can still have them as occasional treats.

If you look after you blood sugars then you will most likely avoid complications so don't worry - it might look daunting right now but you will get the hang of it. I think we've all been through the shock of diagnosis so you are not alone.

Hi and welcome to the forum (newbie type 1 to)

it's a difficult adjustment at first but it quickly becomes routine, although I must admit I'm still eating cardboard lol. It does get easier and you soon come to use your insulin without thinking about it and I'm guessing carb counting will start and then become second nature aswel. I am finding that educating myself on type 1 diabetes is helping me to really get to grips with it and really come to terms with the diagnosis. Finding this forum is a great first step!

Anything at all we can do to help you, please just post.

First few months you may well be thinking 'why me?' And felling that you are alone.. But you arent.. You wil have loads of cyber friends here.

Ask for a dafne course and more help to be flexible with adjusting doses to your food, then you will find that you don't only have to eat cardboard-lol!!

Its a horrible diagnosis initially, but believe me life does get better. The benefit nowadays is there is a lot of better meds, pumps etc for a type 1... And as much as you may currently think it is a pain to have to monitor and have check ups... It is actually good for our health... We have everything checked and we know where we stand in life from the 1st day of diagnosis. Many of the non diabetics think they are healthy, never see a GP and suffer heart attacks etc because they dont get checked over! Honest.. There are benefits to being a T1.

Food will become back to normal as soon as you have mastered carb counting and adjusting your insulin.

You're never alone here!

Try to keep your chin up. It's a devastating diagnosis. I know I just was diagnosed last week.
I've gone from being healthy and no meds to feeling like **** with the bonus of needles and huge pills.
I totally get how you feel and from the sounds of it so does everyone here.
Diagnosis means time to slow down, take things one day at a time, and listen to what your body (and your doc) tells you.

Hi welcome im new here to , only found out on Friday had no warning so I feel like you. Sunday I did nothing but cry because I couldn't see what I could eat or how I was going to work out what I could eat. I cant see the specialist diabetic team until the 13th Feb and that seems a long way away

I cried myself to sleep every night for 6 weeks. My mum also went to my home whilst I was in hospital and removed all food she thought I shouldn't eat anymore!! That 30 years ago when they told you to eat a square of diabetic chocolate and always snack on digestive or rich tea biscuits!!

Thank goodness things have changed!!! You will be able to find your balances of food and meds. Bdec website (bournemohth hospital) do a good on line carb counting course and some hospitals may give you a carb n cal n fat book free of charge.. If not Amazon sell them.

Those two things are so worth doing/getting then just tweaking your meds...

Shame hospitals dont take you in for a few days as they did 30 years ago, you'd be ready to do it all by discharge..

However, check your bloods and record down everyday what activitys you do and what food you are eating...and the doses of meds.. This will give you and your hcp's patterns to work on...

It honestly does become easier, just dont necessarily follow nhs guidelines of eating large amounts of carbs.

The more carbs you eat, the more meds you need, if on insulin- that could mean more chance of going hypo. People generally do find that the more carbs they eat the more weight they out on...

Welcome Cleggsta! I'm DB T2, but, there is tons of info and research about T1 and T2 on this site, as well as on the Web and from hard-copy books and pamphlets. I'm finding that so much has changed throughout the years from the time some family members were given the diagnosis, back when I was a kid.

I wasn't thrilled when I found out about my T2 last month, but, for me it was the Universe telling me that now I have no more excuses about not living the healthy lifestyle I've always wanted to.Lots of work at first, but, we ultimately only value that which we've worked hard to achieve.
See 'ya 'round the site!;)

Strange I work with a guy who has had T1 for 10 years , and speaking to him yesterday he has never heard of the Daphne course seems odd.
Hes going to ask about it today , I think its worth keeping in touch with your health service to keep abreast of new help/treatments ?

do be careful there is a limit to how much insulin, the body can cope with ,better to have half a pizza and a good salad. you still got to be good to your self.

Potatoes & rice, so no problem there then :)
It can knock you for 6 when you first find out. But with a bit of time , information and help from the good people of the site you'll come to find it isn't the end of the world. Yes its a life change, but it can work out to be a positive knowing rather than having it and getting worse. Best of luck and keep us updated.
