We planted some feijoa trees a few years ago and we've suddenly moved from half a dozen fruit a year to this year .... a glut. They are small (much smaller than the ones in the shops) but very delicious.

My googling is struggling to calculate the carbs though. For example, 3 feijoa weigh about 90g, but after you've scooped out the inside there is still 50g left, so I'm averaging 13g of flesh per feijoa.

Wikipedia is claiming 6.5g (net) carbs per 100g, which would make each feijoa less than 1g each.... But only if that 100g refers to the flesh and not the whole thing...

Thoughts please?

They sound delicious & apparently very good for you - I’ve never had them but found this article - I think it’s a try it & see @EllieM - fingers crossed for a good result because they sound very tasty :)

Thanks, that article is very useful

Feijoa Nutrition

Feijoa is a good source of Vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber. One cup of ½-inch chunks (205 grams) of feijoa contains:

Calories: 125

Carbohydrates: 31 grams

Fiber: 13 grams

So that makes it 18g of net carbs per 205g so about 9g per 100g of flesh. So a bit more than my previous estimate but still quite low.

I think of them as cousins of kiwi fruit. Delicious eaten using a teaspoon, once I would have dived into Feijoa jam.

I’ve never tried them , but they are available to buy from local garden centres here.

According to @lovinglife 's article, they are best ripened on the tree, but I doubt that they sell tree ripened feijoas in the supermarket. I've been eating all the ones that have fallen off the tree, which are really really delicious, even though they aren't as cosmetically pretty as the ones you buy at the supermarket.

I think of them as cousins of kiwi fruit.
Very much so, but smaller (or at least mine are.)

What about you try them with the carb count that may be right, and note if it sends you higher or lower than you'd expect for a fruit with that carb content? Adjust the likely carb content based on your findings.

I had never heard of feijoas either and now I want to try them!
