Michael Gove and his insane educational? policies!
Yay! Having maintained the same weight for 3 weeks, I have finally started to lose weight again although it's only 1lb. Still - better than maintaining or putting weight on. Had the dreaded hospital appointment yesterday - some bits good and some bits not so good. Accidentally got put on the consultants list which definitely went in my favour. He was not impressed by the lack of support and said I should have been referred within a month, not 3. He was not happy when he found out that my doc hadn't checked my feet (so he did them there and then) or referred me to Salisbury for my eye test so he sent a letter there and then to Salisbury and sent a copy to my doc (judging from the chilly tone of voice I think this was a bit of a reprimand - good!) . He does not need to see me but has asked for me to attend the training course. We disagreed about LCHF - he perceives it as carb free. He also sent me upstairs to meet the diabetic nurse (please would you have a chat with this lady - she's had a very rough ride) who was absolutely lovely although not in favour of low carb. However, when she asked what I'd eaten yesterday and this week she said my diet was incredibly healthy, was impressed by the fact that I'd continuously lowered my blood sugar to less than half and lost over a stone and told me I was doing very well and should keep it up. She explained that the reason I'd plateaued was that my blood sugar needed to stabilise and that once my body realised that the changes were not short term then the weight loss would continue. Hope she's right! She was surprised at the attitude of my doc towards my meter readings and food diary. Apparently, they are cutting funding for diabetes but will be going to the surgeries to do training. She told me that the consultant would store away my docs comments about no need for feet and eye referrals. Think he might be in for a bit of a hard time. Good.
As a post script I should like to explain that a friend of a friend had taken her son to see my doc as he had fallen asleep at school, was really not well and she was worried about diabetes as it ran in the family. She was told he just had a virus, diabetes was relatively rare in children and sent home. 2 days later, he was hospitalised, put on a drip and diagnosed as T1. Still very poorly and in hospital. Someone was sent out to speak to doc who said he'd be more careful next time. Disgraceful! Hope she writes a complaint.

all sounds good :) well done on the lb weight loss, sounds like that doctor sucks :( well, forward and onwards :) your doing great!

Thank you. Just want to start losing the weight as I can't "weight" for it to come off. Groan! :)

Hope your friend's son feels better soon and gets all the help and support he needs. Poor wee lamb.

Good work Scandi  They may not agree with your LCHF lifestyle, but the results speak for themselves.

I hit a bit of a plateau recently myself so decided to shake things up a little. I think eating the same delicious breakfast and lunch every day made my body complacent, so I made a few substitutions this week to keep my body guessing. It did the trick.

Do you find it's a time thing? I'm supposed to get 30 mins for lunch but am lucky to get 10 mins!

Not a time thing, I just found food I liked and was sticking to it. So for example

Breakfast: cheesy omelette
Lunch: almonds, baby bels, blueberries and creamy decaf

Changed to the odd day of

Breakfast: fried egg and quorn burger
Lunch: veggie jelly, strawberries and creamy decaf with almonds later in the day for a snack

Maybe coincidence, but my weight started moving again.

I eat lunch at my desk and have to answer the phone. Doesn't bother me as I can eat and skive when I like. The other day though I was in a long meeting and missed lunch completely. My boss is an android apparently. I felt a bit dizzy, but my bg was ok.

Always remember 1lb is a lot of fat! Just imagine what a 1lb of lard looks like, and you lost that much. It's more than you think. You are doing well, so onwards and upwards. Your doctor is one of those rubbish ones, but at least now you are on the right track, and thank goodness you were put on the wrong list - it defo went in your favour.

Well done you and even more impressive that you did it on your own with so little support from your doctor - you obviously have grit and determination and will no doubt achieve your goals!!!!

YAY well done! I too have been on the same weight for the past 3 weeks and finally it has gone down today - only 1/2 lb but at least it's not an increase.

Thanks for all the support! I love this forum as it is one of the best support networks around!

Sorry to hear that your GP wasn't any help, WELL DONE! On tackling the weight, my journey with this has just begun. I do find that I keep an eye on my food for a few days then have the odd day when I pig out a bit it seems to give the weight loss a bit of a jump start.

Well done on your loss :-) Stick to it and those 1lbs will surely add up. Hope your Dr gets a right telling off - sounds like an idiot!

So the GP couldn't even do a finger-prick test on the spot. Pretty incompetent when told the family had a history of diabetes and it's not that rare in children either.

Exactly! Had I known, I would have done the test for her and she could probably have got him the treatment he needed sooner. In any other profession he would have been in serious trouble! This is the same practice which stopped my meds when I had pneumonia, saying that I was on the mend which resulted in me being driven to hospital drifting in nod out of consciousness. I guess that sometimes they get a bit complaisant but it really isn't good enough! Especially when it comes to children!

Congratulations on the weight loss and the determination to keep going when things had slowed down, that's the important bit.

On a more sober note, my friend went to visit her friend and son (only 8 years old) in hospital and he was discharged today. His bs after the 1st 24hours was 94! He is now on insulin 4 times a day. I have told her to tell her friend about this site!
