Yay! Having maintained the same weight for 3 weeks, I have finally started to lose weight again although it's only 1lb. Still - better than maintaining or putting weight on. Had the dreaded hospital appointment yesterday - some bits good and some bits not so good. Accidentally got put on the consultants list which definitely went in my favour. He was not impressed by the lack of support and said I should have been referred within a month, not 3. He was not happy when he found out that my doc hadn't checked my feet (so he did them there and then) or referred me to Salisbury for my eye test so he sent a letter there and then to Salisbury and sent a copy to my doc (judging from the chilly tone of voice I think this was a bit of a reprimand - good!) . He does not need to see me but has asked for me to attend the training course. We disagreed about LCHF - he perceives it as carb free. He also sent me upstairs to meet the diabetic nurse (please would you have a chat with this lady - she's had a very rough ride) who was absolutely lovely although not in favour of low carb. However, when she asked what I'd eaten yesterday and this week she said my diet was incredibly healthy, was impressed by the fact that I'd continuously lowered my blood sugar to less than half and lost over a stone and told me I was doing very well and should keep it up. She explained that the reason I'd plateaued was that my blood sugar needed to stabilise and that once my body realised that the changes were not short term then the weight loss would continue. Hope she's right! She was surprised at the attitude of my doc towards my meter readings and food diary. Apparently, they are cutting funding for diabetes but will be going to the surgeries to do training. She told me that the consultant would store away my docs comments about no need for feet and eye referrals. Think he might be in for a bit of a hard time. Good.
As a post script I should like to explain that a friend of a friend had taken her son to see my doc as he had fallen asleep at school, was really not well and she was worried about diabetes as it ran in the family. She was told he just had a virus, diabetes was relatively rare in children and sent home. 2 days later, he was hospitalised, put on a drip and diagnosed as T1. Still very poorly and in hospital. Someone was sent out to speak to doc who said he'd be more careful next time. Disgraceful! Hope she writes a complaint.
