Received my code free meter this mornng, and thought I would get straight to it, though with a little trepidation since I was out last night and drank 4 pints of Guinness, other than that have been basically following LCHF, with a max or 1200 calories, and extra exercise for since diagnosed approx 6 weeks ago.

Fasting 5.5 prior to breakfast of 2 slices of burgen soya and seeded toasted bread with butter and cheese.

2 hours after 7.7

DN put me of 1 x 500 gms Metmorfin from day 1 but only been taking it for 2 weeks, then received a message on the
Telephone last week, advising me to upstage dose to 2 tabs per day for 2 weeks and then 4 tabs per day thereafter.

QUESTION, the above advice from DN stems from blood tests taken because I had a stroke 4/5 years ago, I appreciate they now test for diabetes and am thankful for that , however in the forums opinion should I keep upping the dosage of the Metmorfin?

I will continue to monitor of course.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

This is just my own opinion and I have no medical training at all. Is your dose of metformin 4 x 500mg per day? If so,as far as I understand it this is the normal maximum dose prescribed to diabetics, so seems fine to me (my own dose is 2 x 500mg) So I would be happy to take that dosage.

I feel your 5.5 fasting blood test was possibly lower than it would have been if you hadn't had the Guinness the night before. This is because your liver would have been busy dealing with the alcohol and not releasing glucose as it often does when fasting (look up dawn phenomenon) I would be happy with 5.5 fasting levels but others on the forum achieve lower.

I would suggest that in addition to testing before you eat, you test 1 hour after starting to eat and again 2 hours after starting to eat to find out which foods you personally can tolerate and which spike your blood glucose levels too high. 7.7 isn't a bad reading - normal is under 7.8. Mine would be higher because I can't tolerate any bread.

The dose may depend a bit on whether it's Metformin plain or SR. Normally the max dose is 2000mg/day total. Most of us have the dosage increased gradually over a few weeks. Metformin is a very safe drug so don't worry about increased dosage within the limits. It is like most drugs, however, the law of diminishing returns as dosage is increased.
