Hi

my meter arrived today (Onetouch Verio Flex). just done my first ever test. Very pleased with the results which were 5.3mmol/L and that was approx 1.5hours after eating.

Is that a good reading to have???????

Gary

That would seem excellent, @essexgary

It would be good to also know your glucose level immediately before you eat, as well as at 1.5/2 hrs after so you have a comparison as to how much/little your meal pushed you up.

It was probably a bit scary, being your first test. Well done :)

Oh, I would have tested before hand if I had the meter lol. I ate out this evening after work and the meter was at home when i got it.......

Had to give it a go... you know the score... new toy and all that........ lol........

just need to wait for my box of test strips to turn up (hopefully tomorrow) so I can test away. Not sure how many times to test a day so was going to start with either before and after lunch and dinner or add in when i wake up and before bed too.... 4 or 6. but don't want to go mad.....

Cheers everyone for your support.

Gary

Excellent reading. Well Done. :)

That's a good result Gary!
I'd suggest that for the next couple of weeks or more you try to test before and 2 hours after breakfast, lunch and dinner and before bed every second day and only do one double test per day thus rotating through the different meals, so every second day you end up with a BG reading for a different meal. This should save on test strips but will still give a pretty good idea about how well you are doing. Keep a note of what you've eaten at each meal and that will give you an idea about how your diet affects your BG and you'll then start to be able to adapt your diet to keeping your BG down.

Personally I test 7-10 times per day! But it's all a personal journey. Just get to your destination in your own way! Good luck with the new meter!

@essexgary - It's up to you how often you test your blood sugars. Everybody tests first thing on a morning to see what their Fasting Blood Sugars are.
I test 6 times a day because I take Insulin and Metformin Tablets daily.
Are you taking any medication for your Diabetes? Or are you just diet controlled? :)

@essexgary - superb result!

When I first got my meter I tested fasting, before meals, one hour after meals, two hours after meals and before bed. I got quite obsessive as I'm diet controlled so there was a lot more testing going on to see which foods worked best.

I've loosened up on the testing now as I'm happy with my diet choices, but will test more stringently if eating something I haven't prepared myself. @miahara's suggestion is an excellent one and you wouldn't go through as many testing strips as I did at the start.

You are a Type1 @AFoxy74. The OP has to pay for his expensive test strips and that is why he is asking how many tests he needs to do.

Thanks Everyone.

Im Diet controlled for now. I went and see the nurse last night for my intro meeting and was advised that they want to put me on Metformin straight away. but I said I would at least like to control this and see if I can lower my HBA1C levels myself. (HBA1C was 70 from my official blood tests).

tested for the first time last night as I got my new toy lol and got the 5.3 result which I think is quite good. I just don't know how regularly to test and what information I will gain from it. Think I need to do some reading around it and then decide as don't see the point in testing if im not going to use the information gained.

On a good diet at present and have lost 5lb in 2 weeks. But think I have lost around a stone since going to the docs in the first place as I did weigh near 16st and now im 14st 13lb.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. big hill to climb and loads and loads of information to digest. Any pointers advice etc will be gladly taken and looked at.

Cheers Gary

The best way to learn is to keep a food diary including portion sizes. Test immediately before you eat and again 2 hours after eating. Record those levels on your diary and take particular note of the actual rise from before to after. This should be kept under 2mmol/l and ideally under 1.5mmol/l. You can then start testing at an hour, 2 hours and 3 hours after to see what is happening at other times. Also test your fasting level as soon as you get up in a morning, and again just before you go to bed.

@essexgary - Hi Gary :). Eat to your meter and you will in time get the hang of it, and know which foods you can eat and those to avoid. As for testing follow the above information posted by member Bluetit1802.
A lot of forum members follow the LCHF Diet (Low Carb High Fat) as it helps them to lose weight and lowers their HBA1C and blood sugars too.
