Today was my first appointment with the DN. everything was ok about understanding what I have, what my reading was and meant. The bad side of diabetes and how to manage. However, She says I should eat Scott's Porride, one fruit a day, a couple of new potatoes, try some seeded bread and fat free Yoghurts. The carbs are too high! The bread would finish me off for the day lol. This lot goes against the LCHF diet. I'm confused :(

your DN is just following the advice from the NICE guide lines and the eat well plate .. they are a bit behind the times

You have stated in your post that it goes against low carbing, you know what that amount of carbs would do to your blood glucose levels. How is it confusing, you have answered your question.
Low carb works, the eat well plate doesn't!
Otherwise, there wouldn't be an epidemic of T2!
Do what you think is logical!

We are all told to eat carbs and fat free products. These are the NHS guidelines (The Eatwell Plate), which are now being discredited but things in the NHS are slow to change. Carry on as you are with your low carb and increased fats, and next time you see her you can tell her how you have got your numbers right down. :)

I've been back recently for a 3-monthly follow-up blood testing from my initial tests and diagnosis back in May - and said nothing to the nurse about what I'd been doing! I somehow knew I'd get questioned on why I was on the low-carb diet, and I just couldn't be bothered! This forum's where I'm coming to for advice, answers and support.

Mind you, I heard something recently on the radio - a programme about all the questions over why we were all told to go on low fat diets back in the 70s - and in it, someone said that later this year the eat-well plate is being revised.

Don't let it confuse you Kim, it's quite normal DN rubbish. They usually say all the above plus, you should eat carbs with every meal and low fat this & low fat that (which all contain sugar) mlne told me malt loaf, a cake now & then and some choccy wouldn't do any harm. the proof that LCHF or LCFF diets work is here on the forum, so many people succeeding with weight loss, lower BG, lower colesterol and lowering hba1c. I have lost over two stone and kept it off for a year, all my bloods lowered and I feel better. You have done so well in the time you have been on the forum, you have really got stuck into this, keep at it and when you go for your next DN visit she will be surprised at your progress and think it was her advice that did it. Then you can surprise her and tell her you did it your way with LCHF

Thank you poohtiggy, I will continue to do what I'm doing. Though I am getting. Lot of headaches, maybe I'm missing something? My sugars will be over the place for a while until I get to 4 Metformin. I'm struggling to get to three with the side effects I've got.

I have a condition, where control is essential to my health.
I have to very low carb.
My specialist endocrinologist recommended this lifestyle because of the repercussions if I didn't.

You have a chance to be in control of your blood glucose levels by reducing your carbs and getting your hba1c level down.
The help is by reading and recommending the low carb forum and finding great recipes and ideas, to give you a chance to get back to normal levels.

No other diet or lifestyle will do this, I have tried them all and the only one that works is LCHF!

You got the choice, I didn't!
I've never felt better!

Are you drinking plenty of water Kim? Dehydration may be the reason for your headaches. It is common on low carb unless you drink plenty, and I mean, plenty. Don't worry about your Metformin. You can ask for the slow release version which is kinder than the ordinary, and it won't help that much anyway. It should help reduce your appetite and help a bit with the morning fasting readings, but it won't do much else. Diet is the key, not Metformin.

Are you on standard Metformin or the slow-release version? The latter are much better in terms of side effects.

Headaches can be a sign of not drinking enough water or lack of salt in the diet - once you cut out bread and processed food you might actually need to consciously add more salt to your food!

Are you adding extra salt to your food? On LCHF you need extra salt. I think, but I'm not sure it's because of the low amount of carbs ( somebody will put that right) sorry you are struggling with the Metformln, side efects from meds can be unpleasant until they really get into your system. You are doing really well, you will get there when the meds settle.

Correct, you have to make up for lost salt hidden in starchy and carby food.

You're doing great. Remember that finding you've got diabetes and then running into contradictory advice just when you're vulnerable is a bit like moving house (from one way of life to another), losing a loved one (farewell roast potatoes etc) and suffering a shotgun marriage to a stranger (T2). No wonder we're confused and our bodies are going to protest from time to time.

Kim, you are doing great! You are inspiring me, and I've had T2 for years, lol. I'm getting back into LCHF after letting things go for a while.

I hope this thread has cleared up the confusion you had as a result of your DN putting you wrong. They really don't know how inaccurate they are.
