Hi guys,

I'm 17 and have been T1 for 8 years now, since age 12 my control has been intermittent. I've always been told it becomes like 'brushing you teeth' but never has. I still regularly forget to test, before meals and when I go to bed. I am constantly aware of my diabetes and is not a matter of ignorance. My family around me are supportive but due to illness cannot always assist me. Is/has anyone gone through this. Any tips are greatly appreciated,

Hi @Roasterfred :)

I connect my testing with certain things, particularly meals. So when I'm cooking, I'm thinking about the carbs in my meal and planning when to do my bolus. Then that reminds me to test because obviously I want to know my blood sugar is ok before I eat. I also have my meter by my bed by my phone, so I automatically test when I wake up. Then at bedtime, I want to be sure my blood sugar is ok so I test again before I go to bed.

Can I ask if you count carbs and adjust your insulin to match the carbs in your meals?

Put a note in your pen container.. Saying "blood test"...
This will help..

Yep I forget..
Get a blood testing machine that you can put an alarm on it..
My accucchek aviva expert has alarm set because I forget..

I'm bad about testing before meals too...I just wanna eat!but as I am eating my meal, I set an alarm to test my 2 hour post meal. I keep my pen needles, and lancet needles on my beside table, and before I shut off my bedside lamp, seeing the needles reminds me to test.

Hi @Roasterfred
welcome to the forum :)

it is a great community and I would add to the choice of setting alarms on a phone or tablet

@himtoo I actually have a Aviva expert with the alarms, which i'm hoping helps, i was thinking a routine I.e setting times to test (+when i need to) might help, my HBA1c has been lingering around 12/13% which needs dramatically changing, it makes me so lethargic and feels like im wasting my body. (Sorry for Ranting)

you're not ranting at all -- I am really proud of you for being brave enough to post and ask for help
and we will try and be there for you as you make changes to try and get the D beast properly trained and in it's cage :D

i normally test about 11-12 times a day and I do find it is just an automatic thing I do
but I can totally understand how life can get in the way of remembering

keep posting !!

The expert machine is brilliant at alarming at the set times.. I have to set mine for 4am and itways wakes me to test..hot it set up 2 hourly for day time..

It does allow you to just dismiss it or itt does switch itself off after 3 alarm bleeps.. Its good.

I have a dreadful memory and used to forget my basal eveninj jab rarely.. However, 8pm it reminds me every night...

Trying different treatment starting August and will miss using my expert machine...

Its Posts like this that keep me going, it so easy to feel alone with diabetes, especially when everyone around you can only understand as a 3rd party. I've now set my alarms and have set myself small achievable goals, I may post in the near future with updates on my health, I feel that having the support from everyone on here is the first step to getting back on track. I really appreciated all of your help,
fred
