I am currently recovering at home from a major operation for cancer and have had numerous visits from friends and family. My visitor this morning decided to call in Greggs on the way and turned up with salted caramel custard doughnuts:hungry::hungry:. I have to confess to being rather partial to custard doughnuts which is why I am grateful when colleagues only bring jam ones into work. As I felt it rude not to indulge and, in my defence I needed cheering up, I decided to join her. However I decided to justify my momentary lapse by experimenting as to what effect it would have :nailbiting::nailbiting: and results are as follows:- 5 min pre doughnut and Tassimo Latte BS = 5.3, 1/2 hr = 9.6 :eek:, 1 hr = 7.7, 1.5 hrs = 7.00, 2 hrs = 5.9 and 2.5 hrs = 5.4 :happy:. Can I conclude from this that a) my diabetes has been reversed or b) I am just lucky?

A good result will help you to understand your situation well with success

Could be both, but I wouldn't worry as you have a lot on your plate (so to speak) to think about. And, after your op I think you definitely deserve a cheering-up treat. Perhaps not every day though! I hope you recover quickly @Daphne917, and with lots of rest.

Anything that releases those endorphins in your situation is not bad. But nice result.

To be honest, I find the same with a big chunk of proper Victoria Sponge with lots of clotted cream. It must be the fat content, or else my meter feels sorry for me so helps me out.

You have not sinned big time. You have been through a major cancer op and need some comfort food. I think the experiment should be repeated, in the interests of science of course. And I'm wishing you all the best for a swift, and full, recovery.

So they say there's no cure ...... and then it turns out to be a salted caramel custard doughnut. Who would of thought it.

All the very best for a speedy recovery, I’m sure the coffee and donut was just the right medicine, maybe not medically but emotionally I bet it did you the world of good.

You deserve a treat no harm in that, probably helps with your recovery .
On my birthday a couple of months back I treated myself to a steak pie and an egg custard. I was surprised to find 2 hours after eating them my BS was exactly the same as before !!!! Anyway 3 weeks ago I repeated the experiment BS stayed more or less the same again. A few days ago my wife brings home an egg custard from the same shop and I ate half BS went up 2 !!!!! Coclusion the steak pie must be good for me:).
I do find that now my BS is within normal range (currently 33) I can tolerate more food than before

Someone has to sacrifice their body to science!

How could we learn anything, if we didn't have these human guinea pigs?

Hope you are all the better and healthier for this experiment!

Best wishes

Daphne sending you best wishes for a speedy recovery. I cant think of a better reason for indulging in the salted caramel custard doughnut. X

Hey @Daphne917, sorry to hear of your recent operation.....cancer is not something we like to think about or have to deal with....but we don't really have a choice when it does come knocking on our door.....as many of us who are cancer survivors will tell you, keep a positive attitude - that is half the battle - and be kind to yourself (hence the treat!)....you need to concentrate on getting yourself well again for your family and friends and most importantly, for you. That is your priority right now....thoughts and prayers are coming your way for a quick recovery and compassionate medical staff that you have to deal with when you find out what protocol you will need if any. Hopefully you can keep us posted. Blessings/L

My BG is still behaving oddly since my cancer treatment, very unpredictable... and my curly hair is now much straighter ??
Just concentrate on your recovery and be kind to yourself...looks like you might have to repeat the doughnut experiment ;)
Oddly when I was at my most nauseous, cream doughnuts were one of the only things that stayed in for more than 10 minutes !

If your friend had brought a blueberry muffin it would have been a far more severe test. I'm glad you enjoyed your doughnut and had such good results afterwards.you deserved it. :)

Bye the Bye I used to love cream doughnuts with real clotted cream when I was a Devon dumpling.

Thanks everyone for their good wishes. Results are in and the cancer was removed with the op so no further treatment required but have open appt with hospital for next 5 years should I be concerned about any new symptoms. Now looking forward to going back to work and getting back to ‘normality’.

and my poker straight hair turned curly!!!!!! I liked it, but it didn't last very long. Went straight again. :banghead:
I’ve got naturally straight fine hair which I have permed about twice a year - last time being 2 weeks before my op but all the curls have now fallen out - my hairdresser thinks it’s due to my stress and cancer etc but will redo it for free in a couple of weeks time bless him!!
