There is such a surplus of talent in the North that I see our role as missionaries spreading the word to the South. At least this is what I tell my hubbie as he was born in Hounslow and incorrectly calls me a monkey hanger which is incorrect as I am not from Hartlepool. Apparently were all into that up there! Bloody cheek! Sorry @kat but I'm a Northern lass! All the best people are (tongue in cheek) and Scottish and Irish ancestry too although some German way back on grandfathers side. I love bagpipes!

Us northern lasses need to stick together Scandi ...lol

Did you see Robson Greens Northumberland? Fascinating the number of buildings that have roman wall stones in their walls.
I worked in Hexham General for a few years in the 80s its a lovely area.
My sister has a gorgeous holiday cottage in Belford which is very close to the Scottish Border. This is her garden

True - in modern times. At the time of that quote which was pretty lawless, it was common to claim the nationality that had the most advantage at a particular situation ;)

Which to my mind shows politically creative thinking :D

Evidence of this mindset being passed down the generations was in the introduction of the Alcohol Minimum Pricing Act in Scotland, that saw alcohol sales in Bewick soar as Scots crossed the border, shopped, then crossed back ;)

Sorry for that. I didn't mean to be insulting. I thank everybody for their answers to my question, It seems I opened a can of worms, re Scotland. In my defence I used to always support Scotland (particularly in football) as the next best thing to England but I remember at a past World Cup watching England play Brazil at a school I was working in when a Scottish teacher was rooting for Brazil and said anything rather than support England. I was rather taken aback but was soon to realise that this was a common held philosophy, especially as they were all working in England. Then when I was visiting Edinburgh Castle the guide went on about saxonachs? this and saxonachs that and how the English were the devils in disguise. She wasn't joking. I thought that she really didn't know her history and that it was the Scots who wanted to unite with England to make use of our worldwide markets as their own attempt in central America almost bankrupted them. I have to say that this chip on the shoulder has turned me. To be honest the English in the south aren't anti north, they just don't give it a thought. They're not sitting around thinking "I hate the north", They're just getting on with their lives. However should Salmond get his way, I say put the border back in place and all Scots living in England who profess to hate the English so much retreat to north of the border and stop bothering us. Love & Peace.

Unfortunately, other than the difference of different countries within the United Kingdom, there is at least two countries in
England , the south, and the north, both are treated differently depending who is in power!
If Scotland was to declare independence, then the government would be nothing but a conservative one!
If independence is achieved I may have to get myself a one way ticket to some out of the way Scottish resort.

I believe that the majority of Scots would be better off in the short term.

When you here the government, say anything that is bad for Britain, then you know it isn't, only the 1% who have all the money and power!

Had to stop post as needed to get dinner out of oven. How cool about the church! I love little bits of history especially if family are involved. Are you tempted to do a family tree?

i didn,t know metfrormin was excempt, i paid for last two prescriptions, and are my other meds be free as i pay for those as well

As soon as your diagnosed your are liable for free prescriptions, you have to look online, how to do this! Your chemist should have picked this up and your doctor should have told you!

If you are diabetic and on meds then you fill out a form at your docs. Go to the surgery tomorrow. The doc or reception send it off. You will get a card in the post. This is valid for 5 years even if your diabetes becomes diet controlled only. Although you won't get another card. All meds for yo on prescription are free. Do you have your recipts? Go to chemist and politely ask them why they've charged you as you are a diabetic on meds which are supposed to be free. They will ask for the card or exemption certificate. They are supposed to give you a special recipt so that you can claim your money back. I would also complain to the practise manager about your doc.

Oh I know. Mind you I actually don't think that the minimum pricing has made a difference where I live and haven't noticed much difference in the price.

I think you should read what you have written again. The problem is a lot of people in Northern Britain see the South getting most of the investment ie the new rail link and proposed east west link which comes no where near Newcastle / Carlisle or beyond.
The England / Scotland thing is rivalry .. it happens.
I do know that people in the north east of England have more in common with the Scottish people than with the southern english ...especially their socialist beliefs ..not everyone but a lot.
