Fructose publicity - what do us diabetics do?

Hi,

This is my first post so go easy on me? I've been watching tv programmes and listening to radio the last week and both shows have been talking about the ill effects and predicted ill effects that fructose and artificial sweeteners have on your liver? One example showed a liver of a normal (no intake of fructose and no artificial sweeteners) vs a person who's diet was predominantly the ingredient above! It was twice the size! Apparently worse than what a alcoholic's liver would look like?

My long winded point is, where does these leave someone like myself that is type 2 and always take a bottle of Pepsi max and fruit juice and add artificial sweeteners to my cereal! These products are riddled with the above!

I don't think the occasional Pepsi Max is going to hurt. It's like most things, everything in moderation. If that was all you ever drunk then maybe different.

I'm the best diabetic, in fact I'm terrible at being a diabetic, but the one thing that I constantly look out for is sugar in drinks so will consume maybe 3 bottle of Pepsi Max a day.....thinking it's not too bad ! But clearly it is?

I'm going to learn more about this diabetes.....new year new me!!

But moderation in all is the key I guess.

Hi. Pepsi Max has zero carbs so not a problem. I've watched most of the recent obesity programs and have seen nothing about artificial sweeteners being a problem? Many things are harmful in excess but used sensibly I'm not aware of any evidence in humans of an artificial sweetener problem? However, sucrose which is 50% glucose/50% fructose and High Fructose Corn Syrup etc are harmful in excess due to weight gain and fat deposits.
 
I still drink diet coke etc but I still don't think it's harmless but we can't abandon everything we like.
 
I drink a large amount of Coke Zero. I manage my diabetes by diet. I have to drink rather large amounts of fluid because of a medical problem. I also drink water and tea with or without milk depending on the type of tea. I had my gall bladder removed years ago so cannot digest fats and had liver and kidney function as a part of my six monthly blood tests even before I was diagnosed with diabetes.

Despite drinking so much Coke Zero my liver and kidney functions are fantastic according to my GP and Diabetic Nurse.

I should also add that my waist line measurements have not increased. Perhaps the fact that I fill the glass with large ice cubes before pouring in the Coke Zero that dilutes it as I drink helps. I do have problems with Saccharine in drinks and always have. As well as finding it rather bitter, others do not, it tends to cause my abdomen to swell and I also develop headaches within minutes. Coke Zero is free from Saccharin.

Hi Mo. I don't think the CBS article really says much about aspartame other than it might make your brain seek the sugar taste. That is currently being discussed in the media for all artificial sweeteners. As with all sugary testing foods you need discipline to minimise them and this varies between individuals. I believe the mice test needs some verification as many of these tests turn out to not be statistically valid; I remain pro sweeteners in sensible quantity.

Agreed, you may know my view on scientific studies already lol ! I'm not even sure why I posted it as I try to avoid reading them normally. I often have a can of Diet Coke or similar and I'm not overly concerned with the ingredients. I still enjoy a beer and quite a few other "sins" as well. We can't all be expected to give up everything eh ;-)
 
Never seen the programmes in question. As a type 1 I don't worry too much about the fructose sugar in fruit as I see fruit as being part of a healthy balanced diet, as for artificial sweeteners, well I don't add them to anything as I don't eat cakes or sweets (or anything else that needs sweeteners) so my intake will be on the low-side.

Only very occasionally have a diet coke now but do like the Robinson's No Added Sugar squash, what concerns me more about a regular intake of Pepsi Max is the effect it would have on the teeth with all that phosphoric acid, like anything else it's everything in moderation......

whereas Fructose is not good, especially in larger quantities, Several artificial sweeteners are fine I have Stevia, Hermesetas and Splenda in my cupboard. I also have Xylitol, which is a polyol from plants and has a very pleasant taste. the alternative is to give up sweet stuff, which can be done, but isn't easy I suspect.
