Hi all

I was having issues with my bloods for the last 3 weeks going low in the night. See my last post

Nighttime Hypos
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/Nighttime-Hypos.114295/

Now it's gone the other way. I woke up on a high of 21 this morning feeling thoroughly unwell.

The previous night luckily I managed to catch the rise as I had set an alarm for 3am.

I am now on 14u levimir at 9pm and 8u 10am. This is the same as the dose the night before when it was low for 3 hours!

I thoroughly confused and frustrated. I'm at my wits end with this and feel like giving up. 15 years in and I still can seem to control this illness :(

@Maddileigh have you done a basal test to figure out what's going on with your basal requirements. Once you get that done and can be confident your basal dose and timing is right for you then you can start considering whether other issues might be causing unexpected readings, for example is last nights hyper a pizza effect results? What and when did you eat dinner?

First step though would be doing a basal test so you know where you are with your basal requirements.

@catapillar haven't I keep having to abandon the tests due to hypos which led me to start decreasing the basal initially.

I ate chilli and rice for dinner. I did have garlic bread but never usually have this kind of spike after. Pre dinner reading was 6.9 post dinner reading (2 hours later) was 4.9 so I did have 2 rich tea biscuits to preempt a night time hypo, apparently this wasn't needed in the slightest!

I suffered a miscarriage in December and am desperately trying to get my control tight so that I can maybe start trying again, feels like it's all set backs at the moment.

Hi @Maddileigh please try not to get so frustrated, I know it's hard, I too am having issues with my overnight levels and am putting it down to eating late, probably coming down with something and the weather - so am adjusting my overnight basal rate by a unit a night until it comes under control, but last night I was above 14 mmol/l and this is typical of the last 3 nights, fortunately I am using the libre so can see what's happening too, it is frustrating but I know it's temporary and it will come down.

You mentioned about your miscarriage, so my thoughts are that your hormones will take some time to settle down, you may also be coming down with a cold or infection so this will raise your levels. Stressing is not going to help you at all as it will raise your levels, so try and stay calm and accept that you need to do some overnight testing until it come's good again. Can you take do anything that relaxes you, like take a bath before bed with your favourite smellies or a walk in the afternoon ? :)

@Juicyj thanks for your reply. I know the sensible thing is to to keep calm but it's so difficult. I will try a bath this eve and see if that helps. My DSN today said to adjust basal rates every 3 days until I get a steady reading as 1 night isn't enough, maybe that will help for you also :)

Good advice from @Juicyj there. I know how frustrating it is when you're high but take a deep breath and approach things systematically and calmly. I tell myself that every time I get a high as it's so easy to,get upset and/or angry.

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. It could well be erratic hormones contributing to your blood sugar issues. Don't be hard on yourself. Keep going and be kind to yourself. You'll get this sorted. X

@azure thankyou for your kind words. I only recently discovered the forum and now wondering what I ever did without it! BGs finally seem to have stabilised but I'm now scared to eat! I think I'll go baby steps and have a low carb day :)

@Maddileigh so sorry to hear about your miscarriage, I can't imagine how painful that was to deal with, and to have to cope with your diabetes beast not behaving on top of it really can't help.

Might not be any use to you, but when I started reducing my carbohydrate intake recently, I did it one meal at a time, partly so I could see what it was doing to my insulin requirements, and also so it was less of a 'shock to the system', so to speak. It also gives you something to focus on - finding new foods or meals to try, discovering things you like and things you don't.

You can do this! The diabetes beast is a pathetic, slimy, horrible little thing, and we shall not dignify it by allowing it to win!

@EllsKBells thank you for your post. Made me smile which is a hard feat these days!

Feeling slightly more positive today, BG stable all night until around 4am when it started to rise. DP perhaps?

With the wealth of information and the people on this site it will be impossible not to succeed :)
