My OH is losing weight steadily but slowly, and is taking daily walks after his breakfast ever dry day. It's very cold these days but he wraps up well. However, these last few days he comes home looking drained and ill, and almost collapses in the chair. Today he was pouring with sweat and said towads the end he had started to stagger and lose his footing.
He tested and it was 3.9. This was only two and a half hours after his breakfast. What is this and how can we stop it happening? It didnt happen before.

The energy and effort used was just too much, hence Bg drops and he began to get hypo symptoms.
He needs to make sure he has some sort of carby snack during the walk to keep the energy levels up during exercise. I always carry Glucotabs which quickly boost the glucose levels up, then a Mars Bar or some biscuits to keep the levels stable afterwards.

It also relies a lot on the pre breakfast reading, what he ate has a bearing as well. Not enough carbs in any of my meals can send me into hypo territory, below 4 mmol/l.

Thank you to the OP and to Cuglia for this, as the same happened to me yesterday after a really long dog walking session , my BG had been on the low side all day and I felt the same , really dizzy and spaced out , will take something to snack on next time

Ok, thanks for that, that is what I told him. I will make sure he has Glucotabs. Not possible to get a stock of Mars bars in here cos I would just eat them.

Also, if he is going for a walk and he knows it is likely to be strenous, then eat a bit more before he goes out so that if it drops, it wont be below.

I personally wouldnt eat glucose and then a Mars Bar but Im T1 on insulin and would guarantee a double figures bounce after that! If you are T2 then you prob wouldnt need to eat that either IMHO but of course we are all different and you might keep dropping down but maybe one or t'other?

Hob nobs are quite syrupy but oaty so wont hit you like a ton of bricks, but will be sweet enough to 'rescue' your if you are at 3.9 (and T2, not suggesting insulin users take this approach).Besides, its murder wasting hypos on pure glucose if you dont have to!

I should have said he's type 2 not on medication, I forgot. Does this mean his diabetes is getting worse ? Or could it be the extreme cold ? he goes a walk every day and hasnt been like this since the first few weeks when we were trying to sort the diet .

What did he have for breakfast.

Glucotabs are fast acting, whereas the Mars Bar or Biscuits are slow acting......so will not rocket your BG levels whether T1 or T2. A carby snack would be better though after the tabs.

He has porridge with salt & cream, every day. That doesnt make his reading too high and he likes porridge so sticks to it.
