Does anybody know what this is called? Possibly some kind of cornflower, but very delicate, fern-like leaves. We want some for our garden, but don't know what to ask for

TIA

I'm not a gardener but I think it's Cosmos. (Gardeners please feel free to correct me! :)). Sue xx

Agree with Catherine Cherub. They should self seed and appear year after year. Truly beautiful...

Thanks everyone, Mrs hay-char will be eternally in your debt.

It's appropriate that it is a "very old cottage garden plant" 'cos we live in a very old cottage (well, 1890's), and we want it for the garden .....:D

It looks like it would go well in a cottage garden I will try to get some myself

I think it is love in a mist, Nigella damascene. It is a very old cottage garden plant.
Yes, my first thought was love in a mist, as you say it's a very old cottage garden plant but seems to have fallen out of fashion, but it's very pretty.

Like forget me not, once you have it, you have it for life,
We used to have loads of forgetme nots but they've all disappeared. I took some from the sons garden when I was getting his house ready for the new tenants (yes, I know!) The other plant I had was a Jacobs Ladder which is quite tall with sort of ferny leaves and blue flowers but I've just noticed the last one has died off. Will have to get another one from my friend as she's got lots. Also need to pop over to garden centre and get some hellitrope. It smells so lovely but only lasts a season. Maybe they'll have some at the market on Saturday.
