Gastric Discomfort

I’m about a month into keto at about 40-50g. No trouble at all no flu etc until this week. After eating my evening meal, I’m getting a crampy sore feeling in the gastric area (central just below ribs) 30-60 mins after eating (all different meals). It takes a few hours to fade and really is quite uncomfortable. I have no gallbladder since 8 months ago but never got this either beforehand or after the op.

Is this common? If so typically how long does it take to pass?

I’m wondering if it’s some sort of reflux. Does low carb change stomach acid levels? After years of misdiagnosis and omprezole taken totally ineffectually not keen to restart it. Also not convinced reflux/gerd is due to high acid (more likely low so made worse by these meds)

If there’s no common relationship to low carb and it keeps playing up it’ll have to be the drs but want to try what i can before then.

Not sure what might be happening @HSSS but I do know that people are advised to what their intake of fat after having their gallbladder removed.
I hope it settles quickly and of course your GP is best placed to sort it.
Best Wishes.

What is your evening meal? Does it change every day or is it the same?
Might be able to identify something. Have you changed what you are eating... more veg maybe?

Evening meal varies. I’ve had higher fat, lower fat (in case it’s related to lack of gall bladder), more and less protein, more or less veg. Tbh evening meal not vastly different to before low carb and that’s the meal that’s causing me pain. It’s breakfast and lunch and snacks that have changed far more with less bread and more eggs. Overall more fats, often cream, olive oil, a little coconut oil, low carb peanut butter, some avocado. Less milk oddly. It’s similar to feeling really really hungry but it after food not before.

Last night I resorted to gaviscon and it seemed to help a bit short term. but doesn’t address or identify the cause. This morning, before eating, I can’t decide if I’m hungry or hurting still it’s so similar. Maybe some hcl/betain with dinner would help. Next experiment I think.

Yeah I’m beginning to agree sadly. I’m away camping now so it’ll have to wait a week though. I’m just dreading being stuck on ppi’s with no investigation into the cause, just assumptions of reflux like last time (it was gallstones with biliary colic not reflux or even torn rotator cuff! for 4 yrs and several different drs).

I had my gall bladder removed years ago, it took me a long time too to persuade Drs to investigate.
I then had a reoccurrence about 10 yrs later, of the colicky type pains, especially after my evening meal, again it took a while to convince Drs to investigate but when they did a stone was found in what was left of my biliary tract. It was eventually removed via endoscopy. They weren’t sure if it was left after previous surgery or was a new one.
Anyway after my ramble, I think it’s worth a visit to the Drs.

Mmm yeah me too I think. Didn’t realise that stones could be found that much later after the gallbladder was removed. Though I did know it could happen. I guess that’s what I ask when I do get an appointment sometime in the next century. (Sarcasm. It’s hard to get appointments and would likely be a week or two anyway)

@HSSS - I am not challenging the advice to see your GP for an instant, but as you are away and can't access him/her immediately, have you considered swapping your meals around, in terms of timing? If brekkers and lunch are OK, have you tried eating that in the evening, and maybe even having your evening meal at a different time to see if that has any impact? All in the name of science, obviously. :) It might just give you further info/context for your Doc, when you see him/her.

Are you able to make a call and get an appointment made with your GP, rather than defer that too? It strikes me waiting a week to make the call just pushes the appointment out further?

Alternatively, does your GP do telephone consultations? Mine has a (usually) excellent system for that, which can facilitate a conversation, sometimes same day, to assess things, and deal with matters not requiring examination. Of course, I'm posibitve your GP is likely to want to have a prod around, but it could be a way of accessing them sooner, to get the ball rolling.

Well surprisingly I phoned before I head off in the morning and they have a new out of hours service so I’m seeing someone tonight.
