Gestational Diabetes to type 2 possibly?

Hi all,

First time posting and looking for advice. I had gestational diabetes with all my 3 pregnancies and was diet controlled well by myself. I’m technically underweight 32f with no history of diabetes in the family so was a shock!

Since my pregnancies been noticing tell tale signs of high blood sugars. Went for a HBA1C test a few months ago and showed “normal” although never got told but presume they would’ve rang me.

Still been feeling awful so pulled out my old monitor and started doing the testing just so I could understand what’s going on. My readings I think are quite high!
Only been doing it sporadically but starting today will do it more regularly.
Yesterday fasting: 8.5
After breakfast 2 hours (toast): 11.4
Missed as I was out
Before tea: 14.7
2 hours after: 18.4
Before bed: 11.7

Fasting today: 7.6
Just waiting to do my two hour after brekkie.

I never got readings as high as this even with GD. The high readings I retook from my other hand and washed them again to make sure.

Do you think this warrants going and asking for another HBA1C? It’s only been a few months since the last one can things change that quick? Don’t want to come off as someone that is obsessed I’m just recognising symptoms and along with my readings feel it could be worth being checked out again??

Thank you

Hi @Holden1991 and welcome to the forum.
As you realise these readings are running high, however before taking action can you just check the test strips are in date, as it looks like you might not have used them for a while. Also even in date how long ago did you open the pot, they only last so long after the pot is open.

Definitely worth getting it checked again.
Assuming the test strips read correctly, those numbers look to be in the diabetic range, I'd contact the GP and let them know what numbers you're seeing, and also thay you're having symptoms.

Yes, things can change this quick. Blood glucose or a hba1c in the diabetic range only shows diabetes, it doesn't show what type. So should it turn out that it wasn't faulty teststrips but indeed diabetes, it could be a different type than T2.

The most important thing is to verify that the test strips are in-date and that the numbers are correct.
Those numbers are high, particularly before tea. If no snack between lunch and tea that means 2hrs after Lunch may have been very high.
There are about 40 things apart from food which can raise your blood Glucose, however your numbers suggest it 's Diabetes/Carbohydrates that is the culprit.

Thanks :) I checked the test strips and well within date I also opened a new pot as had loads left over from GD as I purchased a lot at once. But will maybe grab a new fresh pot just to be on the safe side!

I thought that I’d never had a reading that high before meals. I had an oatcakes and cheese with is carb heavy definitely but I never really gave it any thought.
A reading of over 18 is crazy to me as never had that high with GD and I did feel rough headache super thirsty dry mouth fatigued so I think it warrants another call with the doctor!

Brilliant thanks so much for your advice. Didn’t want to turn up at the doctors and they presume I’m a hypochondriac as i presume I’ve had a normal result. I always presume it would be type 2 but 100% agree it could be something else so worth getting it checked!

Good luck, and please let us know how it goes!

It’s worth asking for actual numbers too. Not just a commentary.
Do you mean on my HBA1C test :)? I never got the numbers or a call from my last one so definitely interesting to see what it was!

I’ve just ordered a new testing kit as want to make sure my numbers are accurate which will be here in a bit so will start again with that one :)

I had gestational diabetes with my first child in 1991. I can’t remember how far into my pregnancy I was but I was on insulin. It disappeared after but the dr said I would probably get it later in life. It didn’t wait that long and with in a few years it had come back!
