Has any one any experience of these?
My diabetes specialist practitioner has come up with this possibility as an alternative to insulin as I am on maximum glyclazide and metformin.
I mentioned on another thread that the problem is i am getting infections and my BS readings are going very high and not controllable with diet/exercise etc

My practice nurse and other practiioners have never mentioned them as an option .

Thank you :)

A gliptin is a modern diabetic treatment.
The difference between glicizide and the gliptin is how it works.
Gliczide does work to bring down blood glucose levels, but it all depends on the T2 and the way the patient coped with it.
The gliptin works by increasing the first phase insulin response.
If you have insulin resistance or your first phase insulin response is not sufficient to prevent higher spikes. This meds will help.
But as always, if you are able to cope or if you have side effects.
Metformin will not effect blood glucose levels by much. It is used as a general drug to help the organs.

Have you tried dietary changes, to help with your diabetes?
Could you give us an idea, what you are generally eating in a day please?
Dietdoctor.com is brilliant as is our low carb forum.

Diet is not really the issue as such..... the infection is raising my BS by several numbers.
I have been low-carb for years... but sadly my body is not creating enough insulin.
Exercise will lower it to some degree.
But i am waking with readings around 13......

What tests have you had?
Then a trial of the gliptin may help with your diabetes.
Have you been referred to a specialist because of the infection and diabetes?

Instead of doing a waking test especially if dawn phenomenon is effecting your fasting levels.
Wait for half hour after waking before testing and eating and drinking. This is a better way of getting a fasting reading.
What was your hba1c levels?

My waking BS reading went from 10.9 on waking to 12.9 an hour later before breakfast
My Hba1C recently was 71 the one before was 51..... due it seems to infections in recent weeks.

I am unclear about whether I am producing enough insulin or not... I thinkI am producing as can manage some control when well with meds.

I am seen by a specialist team... but they are unable to prescribe anything different until after Xmas

My GP has just rung and has just said they would not change my meds in any case until the infection is under control....

Thank you for your comments

I would welcome any feedback from anyone who has taken a gliptin as to its effects etc

Like every drug, there will be a small percentage who have side effects.
I have been taking sitagliptin for over eight years now, with no side effects.
I can't take ibuprofen!
I can't take other meds due to my lactose intolerance, the drugs I use have to be sugar free, with only a very low percentage of lactose in the ingredients of the drug.
It is so individual.

Yes so difficult... In a way insulin seems a cleaner drug

Hi. I was on a Gliptin together with max Gliclazide and Metformin before insulin. The Gliptin will help a bit but not by a lot. Can you let us know whether you are slim and losing weight? If you have low insulin like I had you will be burning body fat for energy and losing weight. Ask the medics for a C-Peptide and GAD test. These are the two tests for T1/LADA which it looks like you may have and not T2?
