Going to gym

Hi,

I joined a gym at the end last year and have been going most weeks, I started off with the couch to 5k app, which broke me in gently, I can now jog most of a 5k , and I've been doing a little weights.

I noticed that afterwards I was having hypos, as I usually went to the gym after work and before I ate dinner, I was thinking of drinking one of those sports drinks before and during my workouts , has anyone used them and are they safe for us to use?

I'm type 1

Any help appreciated

The sports drink are ok to drink depending on blood sugar levels , I use to use Lucozade to cure low bs but since they have reduced the sugar content it takes quite a lot of content to get enough sugar to cue low bs , I would suggest take bolls before and during gym activity as exercise can both raise and low blood sugar depending on type of exercise being done , as a rule I take high sugar drinks only when sugar is low, I take a quick acting sugar drink with me to the gym along with a banana to give me slow release ,

If you are exercising with bolus on board, it may pay to reduce the bolus (i.e. take less than you usually would for whatever food you are eating pre-exercise). Insulin sensitivity will usually be higher immediately after exercise (so bolus less than you would normally for any food you then eat) and to a lesser extent for the following 48h, enough that many people find they go hypo overnight after exercise - the options then are to (ideally) reduce active basal (which can be tricky judging the timings and dose adjustments), go to bed a bit higher than you would normally in the expectation that you will drift lower overnight, and/or have a bedtime snack to ensure this happens.

I moved my abasaglar from a once-a-day evening dose to a morning/evening equal split as taking the full evening dose post-exercise made me go low overnight. With the split dose I can also reduce the morning dose before lots of exercise which avoids going low during the exercise in the day and also means I have less basal on board for the following night (I still take my normal evening dose, and then back to normal dose the next morning.)

I was recently contacted by EXTOD who do research on Exercise with Type 1 Diabetes.
They are starting a new study. Unfortunately, I am not applicable as I exercise too often and have been doing so for too long. But, for someone who is staring exercise with Type 1, the study maybe a useful way to start with in hand help.

I have no relationship with EXTOD and I’m not trying to recruit anyone for the study. I just thought it maybe interesting.

I also have no link but did go to their conference towards the end of last year and it was really interesting - it would be useful for those starting exercise and even those who do exercise regularly (like me) learned some new things and got to talk to lots of other T1s at different stages in their "exercise journeys" which was also really interesting.

Hello. I only found out about the disease a week ago. Before that, I went to the gym for almost 3 years. I was prescribed a diet. I want to continue going to the gym.
By the way, have you seen the heavy mug that Ronnie Coleman advertises?

Hello - are you asking a question here, if so you're responding to an older thread, can you start a new one and also advise what your diabetes type is and how you manage it with what medication ?

Sorry, I specified the wrong type by mistake
Hi @Zhess Cramer & welcome to the forum, sorry I’m assuming you mean you ticked T1 by mistake and meant to tick T2? If that’s the case you can change it easily by clicking on your name in the top right hand corner, you will get a drop down box, click on “account details’ this will take you to your information then you can scroll down and add or change anything you like.

Hope that helps:)
