Had my Hba1c result - down to 5.2% i.e. "normal" after a few years of "pre-diabetic" range. Long journey from initial diagnosis in 2016 and lchf/keto/fasting and no meds since 2017. At the same time I had results of NHS diabetic eye test in December and it now shows signs of retinopathy. Can't get appointment for follow up with GP till March and in the meantime wondering if there is anything I can do to "reverse" or "slow down" the damage.

I was diagnosed type 2 nearly 8 years ago so have had many eye screenings now. Out of them all I have had two recorded as background retinopathy which was then normal the following time. I panicked the first time round but was reassured by members here that it can come or go. I’d just keep your blood sugar levels in the normal range to try to prevent any deterioration.

Edit for typo

Cold weather, angry people, queues,
It must of been about 5 years ago I was told I had background retinopathy but it has never been mentioned since so I wouldn't worry yourself too much .

I had small changes about 3 years ago, last year my pics were clear. I did chat with the guy at the time who was doing my test and he said it often happens if it’s a small change that it goes away. He said I could have the earlier test the week before or the week after and it could have been clear. He said for small changes it’s just a snap shot in time & his advice was @Rachox said
keep you BS as normal as you can to give you the best chance

Absolute result on your Hba1c. Big high fives and all of that.

I'd say keeping on keeping on sounds like the best bet for your eyes in the long run too.

Thanks for responses. I had noticed changes in my vision previously so got new specs in the summer. I then thought this new prescription doesn't seem right. I'll go back and get it checked. Now I'll wait to see what Dr says - still over a month to go and I am not holding out much hope as I haven't seen anyone at my surgery yet who seems to know much about diabetes. Thanks for the reassurance that it might go away on its own. Still low carb/keto/intermittent fasting. Couldn't imagine any other regime now. BMI 22. So I will keep on trucking on.
