Hi all,

Thanks for letting me post. Just for reference I am 22, F. Went to the GP regarding some concerns about thyroid issues (family history... displaying symptoms of underactive thyroid) however, when I spoke about my symptoms dr was more concerned about diabetes, for reference my symptoms have been: some weight gain, fatigue, irritability/mood swings, general feeling of unwellness, thirst & peeing. The thirst was the one that I think has lead her to be concerned about diabetes. In the room she did a finger prick test which came back within range, I hadn't eaten for around 90 mins/2 hours beforehand, and it was unplanned. I am pretty clueless, and have bloods booked in. I want the finger prick to be a reassuring thing, that I am less likely to have it, but my Dr was still keen to get the blood test booked, as she is worried about potential diabetes.

Has anyone ever been diagnosed even though their initial test came back in range? I also haven't lost weight, but the main symptom has been thirst!

Thanks in advance!

The finger prick test is just a measure of how high your blood glucose is at a given point. If you haven't eaten much in the way of carbs it will be lower. The blood test they want to do is the HbA1c - it gives an average over the past 3 months.

Hi @dollydonut1 and welcome to the forums.

Forum rules specifically don't allow us to diagnose (we aren't doctors and even if we were we don't have you full medical history). As @TriciaWs said, a one off reading doesn't tell you much (though if it had been sky high the doctor might have been tempted to send you to A&E).

It's good that your doctor is doing their due diligence and doing all the tests (hopefully for any thyroid issues too).

I'm sure you're anxious about a possible diabetes diagnosis but my recommendation is that you don't worry until and unless you get a diabetic result from a blood test. Even if you do have it it's hopefully been caught early, and you've come to a great place for advice should that happen.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that your blood reading is normal.

A prick means just about nothing... Our blood sugars fluctuate throughout the day, so you really do need the bloodwork done. A HbA1c is a lot more telling as it's a 3-month average, and if your doc can rule out diabetes, they can look further should something indeed be going on, somewhere. So it's a good thing they're being thorough; it'll be better in the long run, if you want a diagnosis one way or the other.

Whatever happens next, you're welcome here if you have any questions. We've got you.
Jo
