Not too high my ha1bc has gone from 42 pre for around 10 years to gradually creeping up to 52 - my question is would this number require meds but as i’ve had cellulitis in the legs caused by them getting warm during travelling and it took 2 courses of strong antibiotics to heal . also a cough with green tongue for over a year which was treated for oral thrush .

Your HbA1c is just high enough to explain complications like, indeed, thrush. And it being over 48, could merit medication, if you want to go that route. Your doc would likely put you on metformin, when you discuss your most recent results and the issues you've been having. On the other hand, you could bring your numbers back down by cutting some carbs from your diet. Those are the ones causing the raised blood glucose, so if you lower them, you're likely to see improvement.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html explains how, but no need to get all drastic: at 52 you might just need a little tweak here and there to get back into the prediabetic or even normal range.

Good luck, whatever you pick!
Jo

Thankyou for your reply jo.
i was wondering if being pre diabetic for a long time ( higher than normal ) but not diagnosis level could cause the symptoms if cellulitis not healing faster than it did with the antibiotics. .

Hi and welcome. The "diagnosis at >48" does not mean you can't have diabetic symptoms - that is, diabetes, at lower blood glucose levels. I had some nasty symptoms caused by excess glucose with HbA1cs of 43/44. The good news is that getting your BG back in normal range clears the symptoms quickly - at least, it did in my case. I haven't ever taken any diabetic medication, just reduced carbs.

Yeah... If there's more sugar in our bloodstream than there should be, it can feed infections and the like. The bacteria thrive on it, so it's hard to beat down, even with antibiotics, sometimes. You don't have to be in the diabetic range for issues, they can start quite a bit before that. I walked around with wounds that never healed (and I do mean spouting pus for years when I was in my 20's), long before I became a "proper" diabetic. Now if I get a wound, it's a little extra wound-care, and it's all good in a day or two. Still get infections quicker than other people, but 9 out of 10, if not more, I can take care of myself without intervention from a GP or some surgery. Just another reason to try and get good blood sugar control: it makes life a lot easier and less painful and puss-y. :)

Thanks , i would like to do low carb and no medication . i’ve done lowered carb before and lost the excess weight and lowered my ha1bc . i’m just wondering if being pre diabetic for a long time before a diagnosis at ha1bc would cause issues with healing

I was diabetic (by which I mean my BG was out of normal range, I don't think the "pre-diabetic" thing is helpful) for around ten years or so before diagnosis. One of my symptoms was persistent bleeding - for example from from tiny scratches - because my blood wasn't clotting. I bruised really easily, and my skin was like tissue paper. My gums bled constantly from brushing my teeth. So based on that, I'd say it's at least a possibility.
