The sun is lovely but I am in hospital, realy bad stomach pains, blood tests confirmed pancreaitis caused by gall stones, which I have had for some 20 years and never caused any problems before,I have realy been in agony, but feel much better now,the offending stone is being removed on Sunday during a endoscopy.
They are blaming my weight loss and to much fat in my diet ,im on LCHF.
The dietition has been to see me today and said to eat carbs and drop all fats.
Im at a loss what to do.
Everything else about me is good blood sugar is good, blood pressure good and LDL is down since I started LCHF.
I havent tried to lose weight, but lost a stone and a half since June,Im eating plenty of what I feel is the right food.
Your thoughts will be very welcome.

Hi @Patricia21 ....so sorry to hear this ....
I had gall bladder removed last year with about 20 stones removed ....the pain ...the worst ever ...
Have removed as soon as you can .....
I can't and don't eat fat much .....body just won't accept it ....problems before and worse now ...but almost at my normal weight ...
I do medium carb and low fat as you know ...but that is me
They say the pain is as bad as a heart attack ...I feel really sorry for you I really do ...
Just focus on you , if you were in the UK you would have to wait on the NHS for this op ....and just keep going with psin relief , heavy pain relief ...
And getting to A and E every time you have a flare up , so in a way you are sort of in the right place , but not what you wanted ...
Have the operation and keep in touch ....you will be in tne nice warm heat to recover ....how long before you can fly home , this must be very worrying for your family ...and you .....go with the flow at the moment and get yourself looked after ...thinking of you ...kat x

Thanks Kat.
There are not removing the gall bladder, just the stone, been advised to see about the bladder when I get home .

Home on the 17th this month.
Glad I have travel insurance, they are going to pay the hospital direct.
Will try and sleep now as I havent slept for two nights,we are 4 hrs ahead here x

So sorry to read about this Patricia. Off to the warmth and you end up in hospital, it's just not fair sometimes is it.
Now you are faced with the dilemma of what to eat too. For one condition eat this and for the other don't touch it. I hope you manage to get some good advice when you get back to the UK.
Take care and I hope you feel a bit better soon.

Hi and welcome. The advice to eat more carbs is plain silly. No one that I'm aware of really understands why some people get gall stones and I'm not sure it's related to the amount of fat you eat, but may be? Why don't you just reduce the carbs as you have been, have quite a bit of protein and eat sensible amounts of fat. Obviously if you had the gall bladder removed then eating fats can be a problem. I speak as an amateur but there again I don't recommend a diabetic eats plenty of carbs :)

Sorry to hear your so ill, 25 years ago I had acute pancreatitis and almost didn't make it , I was in intensive care for ten days before they operated and removed my gall bladder with thirteen stones . Making healthy choices and reduced carbs with lower fat helps control weight and blood sugars . I've been diabetic since .
Pancreatitis is very painful my thoughts are with you , take care and get well soon.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Patricia, and that you are incarcerated and missing out on all that lovely sunshine. I know from what my daughter says that gall stones are extremely painful. She said worse than childbirth. She had a few flare ups, even collapsed at the emergency centre, but by the time she had her scan a couple of weeks later the stone or stones had gone naturally.

By the way, she has always been low fat but she still got it.

Take care and let us know how you go on. x

I hope you feel better this morning after a sleep...given you had the stone for 20 years, it isn't from LCHF but fat could have made your gallbladder work more and fully empty it... and could have shifted the stone and blocked a duct

as usual there are two stories, one is 'low fat' diets gives your gallstones
http://www.dietdoctor.com/gallstones-and-low-carb

they got half of it, rapid weight loss on LOW FAT diet can cause gallstones
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2669662

the old insulin resistant metabolic syndrome raises it's head too
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22919256

cholesterol level in the bile seem to matter and we know carbs don't help there

Thanks for the information Jack.
Im on fluids at the moment.
I was brought look warm soup for breakfast and Jello.
Also fresh orange juice.I didnt think the acid in the orange juice would be good at all.
I didnt eat any of it.just had tea there was no milk.
I feel very low today.

I guess the low residue is getting ready for the op tomorrow. Don't be brave, ask for drugs for any pain. They should have good hospitals there, so that's one good thing. There are worse places to get ill
You will feel 100% a couple of days after it's out, stones are painful things.
It may not feel like it now, but It's also good news that you will probably keep your gallbladder,

Hi Patricia,
Very sorry to hear that you are suffering on what should have been a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. I cant offer you any wise remarks about your condition, but I can and do wish you a full and speedy recovery.

That's all pretty horrid Patricia. I wish you well for tomorrow's procedure.

I wouldn't like to jump into the ongoing dietary debate, but I would echo the acceptance of pain relief. When I had a major op, almost 14 years ago (where does the time go?), I decided up front that the pain was the thing that frightened me most, and therefore I'd try very hard not to have any. So, on waking from the procedure every time I roused I hit the button on the morphine pump and drifted back off to sleep again - result - no pain. Once my line was removed, I only had a couple of paracetamol as I just didn't have pain. My mother thought I was insane, but it worked for me.

If you have options, don't let pain build up; prevent or suppress it. You'll be less stressed, less exhausted and better placed for your recovery, in my view.

Keep in touch. We'll be rooting for you.

Hello Patricia. When the going gets tough my motto is "I'm doing the best I can" and that always tides me over. I think you're doing the best you can with your diet and everything else and it will get you through. As @AndBreathe says, don't put up with any discomfort you don't need to.
I'm thinking of you among your flower pots and beds, like in your avatar. Soon be back there!

Happy New Year @Patricia21 Hope all goes well with the opp; There will be a lot to discuss when you return. In the meantime grab as much sun as you can.:)

Hi Patricia sorry to hear about your recent troubles, definitely not what anyone wants for Christmas.

Regarding your diet and the difficulty you now face with fats I would suggest that you search the forum for SouthportGP diet suggestions, from memory he suggests a low carb diet but with only moderate amounts of fat and only the good fats at that, he advices against cheese as it is very high in calories and suggests small amounts of potatoes, fruit and other carbs in limited amounts.

It is pretty much the same diet that I have eaten since loosing weight and it has helped me to successfully hold ,my hba1c in the 5%s now for 6 years.

I would give you the link but cant find it immediately perhaps someone else can find it.

Good luck with your new lower fat lifestyle
