Has any else had trouble with their sharps bin collection ?

I think it depends on your local council as to how sharps bins are provided and collected. I was on insulin for the first year after diagnoses of T2 diabetes and was told I would get a sharps bin on prescription and could dispose of t at the doctors.

When I went to the doctors to arrange this I was told that I had to phone the local council and they would supply a sharps bin and arrange for its collection and drop off a replacement at the same time.

I phoned the council and they gave me another number of a private company who had the contract with my council, they dropped me off two boxes and I had to ring them when they were full and they would come round and swap the full ones for empty ones.

This worked well until I last phoned and said I had two bins to collect but did not require any more, this was 5 years ago now and I still have two used sharps boxes sitting behind my computer desktop tower!! Out of sight out of mind......

This thread has reminded me to call them again or perhaps I shall just give them to my wife to take to work as she works in a hospital and I'm guessing could dispose of them there somewhere, I shall ask her tonight, just thinking as im typing now!!

As for what to do if you run out or dont have a sharps bin I used to use an empty water bottle when I went away rather than take a bulky sharps bin with me, you could always do that and then when you get a new bin just tip/decant them into the new bin :)

I am astonished there is a service for collecting bins. If you can pop over to your GP and pharmacy then why do you need the bin collected? Unless we're talking disabled or elderly people who can't physically make the journey then I think this is madness.
My GP or pharmacy don't take the bins, even at the hospital they don't. I have an NHS sub contracted company "Ananta" supposedly collecting them, although in reality they are totally unreliable. (Personal rant wedged in)

My DNS advised me to put sharps and pens into a bleach bottle. Safe I guess because of the child-proof lid, but she didn't say how/where to dispose of said bleach bottle. If people are having trouble disposing of a "bright yellow" sharps box, then what chance does a person have of trying to offload a bleach bottle? Lol

Practise nurse told me yesterday to put my lancets in a jam jar and put that out with the household waste as type 2s don't get sharps bins !!???

You can buy a sharps bin from your pharmacy they cost a couple of pounds. A soft drinks can works very well for old lancets as well :)
