At the moment suffering from a bad attack of gout .
I have had it before and it normally gone within a few days.
Taking cider vinegar and cherry concentrate which has helped in the past but don't seem to be doing much at the moment
Don't want to go down the pharmacy route comments appreciated..

I have gout. First I just took painkillers for pain in my toes, but when one of my feet swelled up, from toes above the ankle, I showed it to a GP. She said that she could see it was gout, and there was no need to take bloods to confirm it. However, I was offered regular tablets. I chose to try to manage without those, but I am taking painkillers when the pain gets really bad.

I have been using cider vinegar for my gut health for years, ever since Michael Mosley's first book was published. I do mix frozen cherries into my yogurt. I cannot say if they help or not.

The swelling re-occurs sometimes, but mainly I use Co-Codamol for pain, but don't need to every night.

I do not think that gout has anything to do with diabetes.

Usually it's ureum crystals causing the problem. For me it's a cause of kidney stones: same crystals, different area. I tend to take sodium bicarb to break down the crystals, if I don't forget. The main thing would be cutting down on animal protein though, (aside from drinking lots of water), but on our diet that's not always exactly doable. Have you been having a lot of red meat lately? Tending towards a carnivore diet? I loved that way of eating, but it wasn't suitable for me, alas... Dunno if any of the above'll help, but it's what the nephrologist came up with. (Oh, and lemon juice in my water, that too.)

In any case, hope you feel a LOT better soon!

I had a series of gout attacks around 2018/19, in both big toes. Incredibly painful. I was very overweight.

Naproxen worked well for me for the pain. I suspect mine was linked to my diabetes, both having something to do with inflammation, plus I've not had even a hint of trouble since sorting my BG out, despite eating lots of all the things that are supposed to cause it.

I’ve had gout and my god it can be painful mine was to due to my kidneys uric levels all to **** . if you do get it get to the docs and get some Alipurinol and just get doctor to keep and eye on your urea levels , cos believe me a bad dose of gout is something you dinny want ,

I used to get gout attacks and it was miserable. When I got it in both heels and both elbows at the same time I decided ENOUGH. I have been taking high dose preventative pills for many years now and its been a game changer though it did take nearly a year to disappear completely. I tried everything like dark cherries etc but decided that the meds were the way to go.

My OH has gout - his is hereditary (not sure it all is) as soon as he started allopurinol the pain went and has not come back - in years
I tried to avoid the nhs way but had to give in .they put ne on a short course (12 tablets over 3 days )of colchicine..finished them 8 days ago..the stabbing pain went to tender then its still there but sore then yesterday I felt able to do a days work cutting down overgrown hedge and ivy .
I think I over did it as this morning feet were really sore the uric acid crystals are obviously still there .
Does your OH take the allopurinol all the while or just at the flare up?

I've had gout since I was aged 23, but I've been taking Allopurinol since I was 39, so I've not had a twinge in that time. Before the medication, however, my attacks were excruciating. Easily he worst pain I've ever experienced.
When you say you don't want to go down the pharmacy route, does that include painkillers? Before Allopurinol I was prescribed high doses of Ibuprofen, then later, Naproxen.

I was diagnosed T2 in 2013, so I'd had gout for 27 years by then.

I believe it can skip a generation too. My granddad had it, my dad didn't but me and my twin sister have it (I take Allopurinol, she insists on diet control, but still gets attacks).

Gosh how painful in heels toes and elbows. I have on and off been suffering with rheumatism in my elbow joint and tennis elbow thrown in. It clears up then I forget and overstretch reaching for something and the ligaments pull and I am back to square one. The pain takes my breath away at times.

It's another week since last post
I try and avoid pharmaceuticals painkillers as much as I can ..the pain this time was as bad as a dental abscess I had some years ago..
I still have discomfort on the soles
But only 1 on a scale of one to ten.
A herbalist friend suggested arnica pills which I think have helped
I have gone back to work but the enforced layoff seems to have weakened me somewhat
Looking back I've had muscle and joint aches for years, who hasn't in the building trade?
I'm thinking this has possibly been I'm my system for a lot of years..
