Have I Got a Good Argument Against Statins?

http://www.hughcalc.org/chol-si.php

This is the ratio checker that I have used. My figures for cholesterol have gone up on LCHF but my trigliceride figure is very low and my ratios come out ideal so I refuse statins.

I believe for an accurate trigs figure it needs to be a fasting test.
Thank you for that! Even with my non fasting trigs figure, my ratios aren't too bad on that calculator.

There is thinking that statins can spike blood sugars. I never want to be on them.

"The new benchmark ratio is triglycerides to HDL cholesterol. A study published in the journal Circulation found that people who had the highest triglyceride-to-HDL cholesterol ratios were 16 times more likely to develop heart disease than those with the lowest ratios."

I doubt your GP will know anything about this 'new benchmark' so you may have to stand your ground. Ideally your trigs should be equal to or less than your HDL, which they aren't, but at least they're heading in the right direction. So whatever you're doing right, keep it up !

Your link quotes a study done in 1997, is it still relevant 20 years later?

'Old' thinking is that LDL is bad. Lots of new thinking is that, with LDL, particle size is all-important. Short of testing particle size, which I wouldn't expect to be commonplace on the NHS any time soon, your triglycerides/HDL ratio is the best indicator of size. Above a ratio of about 1.3 you have more small particles (bad). Below 1.3 you have more large particles (good).

That and the reports of intolerable (possibly irreversible) side effects are reasons I don't want to take them.

If you are interested in lipids and their relative problems for us. Please look at Prof K. Sakaris videos on YouTube. He is an expert in the field of the relevant blood tests and their import. regards D.
