Hi just a quick question .. I had.a finger prick test at 8.30 am on tue with no breakfast and it showed up as 9.5 ..so my doctor asked for me to come off metformin..which I'm on for another medical condition and not diabetes as it could be masking my results.. my dad done a finger prick test on me today as he is diabetic and it's 12.9 ...does this mean I'm diabetic ? I'm due to see docs again on Monday for another test when metformin is out of my system . Thankyou for any answers x

Those numbers do seem a little high for a non-diabetic but you really need to get the doctor to do an HBA1c test to be able to tell.

Hi Sam. Only a doctor can diagnose you, but on the face of it, it would certainly appear that you have some metabolic dysfunction.

Best of luck for Monday. Let us know how you get on. Almost certainly your doctor will order a HbA1c blood test. In the event that you do have diabetes, then you are certainly in the right place to learn how to manage it.

Thankyou for your reply, I will let you know how I get on Monday. I am quite nervous about itas I had it when I was pregnant 3 yrs ago and had to have my baby early because they couldn't control my levels even with injections but it went as soon as I had the baby x

Yes, your fasting levels are high (anything 7 or over is a marker for diabetes, but not sufficient on its own for a diagnosis.) It sounds like your doctor will give you the HbA1c test, which will confirm matters. Good luck. :)

I would like to put your mind at rest that if you do have diabetes of any number 1, 1.5 or 2, it is a manageable and in some cases reversal condition, so in short don't worry, the support you can get from here will be 90% plus correct, with the final percentage being personal tweaking. Please be wary of out dated information that persons outside of this forum provide, and try to ensure that if any further medication is recommended to you, it does not contraindicate with your other condition (you may have to check this yourself).
