Have I left it too late

Hi everyone,

After 30 years of non-controlled diabeties I am scared that I have left it too late to turn my life back around.

I have prolific retnotherapy (sp) in boths eyes and they are lasered up to the max. I am having bloods taken tomorrow for my diabetic appointment on 15 April but I think everything else is working ok.

Can I start again and how do I start again ? My diabetic care team are rubbish so I am asking you guys for help please.

What sort of things should I eat for breakfast as that is when my BS are highest.

Thank you xx

Never too late to start taking control o your diabetes. May not reverse your existing complications but should certainly help prevent further damage. Ask any questions you need to help you get started. Good luck.

Porridge, weetabix or conflakes
Sandwich and crisps for lunch
Pasta or pizza or meat and veg for tea
Lots of choc and crisps in-between xx

Thank you, I am just scared that at 45 how much longer do I have left before I die?

It's never too late to make a change. Whilst making changes might not necessarily reverse any damage your diabetes has caused, it's definitely a step in the right direction to stop things getting any worse.

It's not too late to make a major difference to the rest of your life - quality and quantity.

You don't say if you are Type 1 or 2, what medication you are on, meter readings, etc. That will help people to help you.

What you should change is going to depend how much discipline and staying power you can bring to the table. For best results go very low carb - but only if you can stay the course. , Otherwise, moderation.

Definitely start with cutting out the carby snacks between meals. And how often are you doing blood tests? More testing will usually help loads.

I would start by trying to reduce the amount of carbs you're consuming. Bread, pasta, crisps, chocolate, cornflakes will all elevate your BG levels. Unsure how you treat your diabetes but whether you're insulin dependant or not, these won't help.

:eek:Stop being so blasé .
You know its never too late to save your eyesight and your life.
Adjust your diet and get a grip.
Thank god my eyes are still OK
Stop sitting on the fence.

Sorry about the rant I am usually quite supportive.
But you need a good kick up the Bum.

I am sorry to say that it was eating foods such as these that gave many of us Type 2's diabetes in the first place!!

No as others have said it's never too late to turn things around, however as you have prolific retinopathy you do need to be very careful and lower your Hba1c over a longer period of time than someone who doesn't have retinopathy, sudden tightening of bg control can make diabetic retinopathy worse, so do consult your Ophthalmologist and Consultant first.

Never knew that noblehead... Learn something new everyday (or hour in my case). Good luck with your new found drive we are here to help. Why not start by dropping the choc/crisps and replace them with some salad (:yuck: but has to be done), nuts and/or blueberries/ raspberries (not too many of these).

Your diet is not good. You must reduce the carbs as these are the enemy for diabetics. Set yourself a daily max of 200gm or go for 150gm if you can. bacon and eggs are fine for breakfast, as an example

It is not to late, I'm type 1 and I turned my life for my family's sake. In Oct hb1ac was 8.3 today it's 6.8, it's taken hard work lots of testing, but if I can turn it round with the help of a pump, I'm sure you can.

Read all you can on the Low Carb thread on here. Take note of what Noblehead has said but the truth is that your present diet is awful, truly awful. You have a difficult lesson to learn and in spite of the straight talking in reply to you, we really will support you fully if you make the effort. I am 61 and have improved my situation immeasurably ...so can you. To be honest you must feel absolutely dreadful most of the time given what you are eating so what have you got to lose?
