Ok...to start with I'm not quite sure where I am going with my rattle, but I have need to put in writing so I can make sense of my thoughts. Maybe some of you have gone through something similar?
I am meat eater..there is no doubt about it...I like eating meat and I feel eating some amount it agree with my body in general. And there is the 'problem'...my head doesn't agree with it. I don't like eating lamb or goat..because I like sheep and their wool ..and it is something I was never brought up eating..tried it but it is bit 'alien' tasting stuff..not for me.
I made decision few years back that I won't be eating pig neither. And it used to be something I did eat often! And it was purely because I was petting this one particular pig in a farm..saw it how clever it was, like a dog..and as a dog person...can't face eating anything with pig meat anymore. Not even bacon!! I do miss some liver...
Beef..hmm...yes, I eat some amount though not very often, and when I do, I have sourced it straight from the farm that does it with certain principles..the meat is excellent.
My main meat is chicken...which I eat several times of week...no 'head' issues with that..even though I have my own chooks:rolleyes: But they are for eggs only ;)
And then there is occasional times I have some game and fish...that's about my animal protein sources.

Now I'm finding my head is telling me that I don't want red meat at all!! It didn't mind me chopping the meat..and mouth enjoyed last night's stewed steak that I lovingly prepared myself..tummy didn't quite agree as it struggles to digest even a small amount, hence not eating it that often. BUT, later on when my brain started to register what I had...all I saw in my mind was beautiful cow with long eye lashes and pair of brown eyes looking at me back....I nearly brought all the food back up!:yuck:..had to distract my thoughts by reading a book !

I can't believe one's mind can have such a impact to one's diet! I can't face anymore beef and I still have nice lot left to warm up for tonight...I just have do something else and leave others to eat it.
I wonder...if there is inner veggie finding its way out:D I like my veg, and would be very happy with the though eating veggie diet. I have tried it, but it is wasn't enough. It is almost like my head wants be veggie and body won't:woot:
..lets hope my head is not getting any funny ideas about white meats!!
There is my problems....are they coming to take me away fit nice white 'jacket' on me?:wacky:

Hi @Finsky - gosh, what a dilemma! I haven't got a magic answer but would only suggest that you go ahead with experimenting with the veggie aspect and only eat the animal protein that you are happy with (if any), and see how you get on. I have yet to meet a malnourished vegetarian (apart from the friend at university who lived on chips and cheese - no meat, no veg. Now he was in a terrible state!).

And I don't think there's any danger of the white 'jacket'! We all have our different ways of looking at things, and choosing what to include and not include in our lives (not just diet-wise, but everything-wise) - so I see nothing wrong with your thinking.

Good luck with it!

:)

You have to go with the flow.
I am a meat eater, because I have to be.
I live on pig, chicken, beef.and eggs. With a bit of salad veg. Very limited.

It's a good job, because everything else makes me ill!

It's a horrible dilemma and you have to make some decisions, based on what you say, I believe that a trial period to see what you like and what you don't!
There is a vegetarian forum on the site, have a look at it.
Gonna have my fry up soon.
Gammon, eggs, mushrooms, black pudding. All that protein, yum!

@Finsky I don't see you have much of a dilemma. You will draw your line where it feels natural to you. Good you like vegetables though!

Hi I hear you. Although I do not have any compulsions like you to avoid meat, I am thinking of going vegetarian. I love eating meat. Nothing better than roast pork or bacon, but since Ive started eating more vegetable proteins and the price of meat keep going up and up Im starting to think why do I eat meat. Cutting back on calories meant I started to look at food differently. Not sure if I will go vegetarian but I hear you.

I tend to avoid saturated fats, when I can, so lot's of veg, fish, and definitely no processed meats. Seems to work.

You could be a pescatarian. Fish are ugly, and slimy and you cant pet them. This would leave you with the good fish proteins.

Well.....I am chuffed with all the replies....and now I don't feel so bonkers after all. Yes, it might be best to go with what one enjoy eating rather than trying to push it. I still have quite a lot of beef in freezer, left from the last meat box..looks like somebody's dog is going to be very lucky dog indeed and have some lovely dinners... I had chat with hubby about red meats and he is not that bothered anymore with it neither..."as long as you keep doing roast chicken dinners, I'm happy with that..".
I doubt I'll be going full veggie..then again during summer months I have so much home grown veg to eat that I'm not far off being vegetarian.
Pescatarian...that was new one for me, never heard that before! Though I do have to disagree with Kyi....fish are beautiful...they are not that slimy...I might not go and kiss and hug one, but I certainly have been found to stroke one...admiring their beautiful shine and colours :D My dad did lot of fishing..been brought up handling things with fins..;)

Nothing wrong with chicken and fish @Finsky, I tend to eat this more than I do red meats.

Recently I've been reading 'The real meal revolution' book..maybe I just felt bit inadequate with my 'green list meats'.
Yes, nothing wrong with those..I'm sure we our fill of protein and 'what ever vitamins and such' there is.

Unfamiliar with the book @Finsky

My older brother was a vegetarian for 20 years and never had a day off work in that time due to illness, he resisted the temptations of meat at Christmas time and such and was quite happy eating the meat substitutes, my mother was never happy about it and ever time she had the frying pan on when he visited she'd ask him if he wanted a bacon butty, for years he resisted then one day couldn't resist the smell of the frying bacon and give in, since then he's been a regular meat eater, but the point is you can live without meat as many a vegetarian will tell you.

That book is basically about LCHF diet.
Lol...I have sister who is veggie...has been for years...and only 'meaty' thing she finds tempting is pepperoni fat... it is more of the spiciness rather than the meat itself.
I quite like quorn myself, but that is only substitute that will agree with me. I'm sure one can live without meat....I just haven't tried it for very long. I don't know if one's body would get used to veggie diet , but after while I don't feel strong enough..like the food doesn't have enough 'umf' to satisfy body's needs?? Maybe I tried to make the meals 'too healthy'...maybe didn't use enough fats?
Perhaps I need to trial it again...maybe being 'part time' veggie would be better for me?

Graphic description, only read if not squeamish

Plaice have a smile, flat fish tend to look angelic
I don't eat pig anything, and I don't eat chicken (I worked in a poultry slaughter house, not only are the conditions they live in prior to slaughter horrendous but the actual slaughter is just barbaric, they are plucked whilst still alive then, their throats cut to bleed them out, they die slowly, minutes not seconds).
I became a lapsing vegetarian in October 2014, I eat fish and lamb on occasion so the lapse.
I think you have to go with your head.

The trend to have meat-free days seems to be popular, I couldn't do it myself as I like meat too much (in moderation).

I would much rather not eat animal products, but my body disagrees.

I spent about a year (in my 20s) trying to force my unwilling body to cope with vegetarianism. During that time I discovered that I am whey intolerant, soya intolerant and grain intolerant.

Fun eh?

So I reluctantly reverted to a kind of omnivorous carnivorous moral dilemma - and my body heaved a huge sigh of relief and felt better than at any time in those 12 months.

I suppose that I could cobble together some kind of vegan grain/soya free existence, but I can't believe I would feel as good as I do on LCHF. I try to only eat meat once a day though (often fail), and I ABSOLUTELY draw the line on squid and octopi. Their intelligence and conversational skills are awesome. I try to buy ethically and force my head into the sand in an attempt to avoid my conscience on other meats and fish. Happy Eggs anyone?

Hi @Finsky There are a lot of meat eaters who won't eat all meats, think back to the uproar about the horse meat or ask a meat eater to eat cat, dog or other meats served around the world and they wouldn't even consider it. As a lifelong veggie the one thing guaranteed to make me throw up is the smell of bacon, can't have it in the house.

There are lots of low carb vegetarian recipes on the forum if you wanted a few meat free days. http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/vegetarian-vegan-low-carb-recipe-index.61859/

:)..nice to hear it is not just me...I just don't know where these 'moral' issues surfaced in the middle of 'forkful' of food!?
Certainly my parents and grandparent didn't even think of these things and I 've been brought with old fashion values.
But it all started with eggs....seeing battery hens in cages. As I eat lot of eggs..that's even before 'salmonella' and 'cholestrol' scares:rolleyes:....I decide I shall have my own chicken and feed the with best possible stuff to get best possible eggs and provide good life for them in return...BUT...I didn't eat any chicken meat until really last couple of years.
Seafood...YUM:hungry:...but thinking of the state of water some of the stuff is coming from is bit :depressed: So I don't relish much of it anymore.
I have had meat free days quite regularly and even without thinking doing so...until just recently...going LCHF has changed things a little and although I don't eat more protein per se, at least at the moment I feel need for it in more regular basis...I'm still in adjustment period for changing life long habits with carbs.
Yes, I shall venture to veggie side of the forum to see what you all get up to in a kitchen...never too many ideas. Though I already spotted something in my newly purchased 'LCHF book'...some courgette recipes...one can never have too many ideas with those..when you grow you own, you tend to have too many to cope with..:stop::rolleyes::D

If you go veggie, don't even think about what they use for fertilizer.

If you want a conversation with your food..........
