Mo 1905 did you get your hgv licence back I have started on insulin in dec2013 trying to get dosage right but am struggling to get levels stable enough to try to get mine back wondering if it s worth it ?

Yes, got my LGV back but only valid for 12months. I will need to have a medical each year which is OK. Their main concern is hypo awareness and low BG levels. So, it's a pain in the a** to be honest but if it means keeping your job then yes it's worth it. How are you struggling at present ? Please feel free to get in touch if you want any more helper advice with DVLA. Take care.

Got to wait 3 months for meter readings also my levels are spiking from 7 s to 16s got licence back today all I have got left is my car so 7.5 t has gone as well so basically out of a job no other work to do for who I work for !

This is what I was given about driving from dn we had abit of discussion about the levels in it ,it's different to not to drive under 5 they state never drive under 4 so who is right !ImageUploadedByDCUK Forum1396438713.652542.jpg

From the consultant at my diabetes unit

- the only hypos that count are if you were unable to treat them yourself
- you are allowed up to one of these a year (as long as you weren't driving at the time!)
- he does not tell DVLA whatever they want to know. He tells them his opinion of whether you are safe to drive. He does not leave that judgement up to DVLA and does not provide them with facts that he thinks irrelevant that they might use to make an incorrect judgement
- after lobbying by JDRF existing HGV drivers can keep their licenses, subject to extra checks and conditions
- this should also apply to anyone whose job requires eg a 7.5t or trailer entitlement
- it does not apply to PSV licenses or minibus entitlement

This is fair enough. Going into a coma at 70mph on a motorway is going to kill other people. Driving is a privilege , not a right.
 
If you need 7.5t entitlement for a job or career you had at the time of diagnosis then appeal to DVLA and get your hospital doctor to support you if your GP won't. However you will need an immaculate record. That's only fair.
 
In ten years i have only had one problem and that was when I had missed my yearly appointment with my consultant. Because on the form it asks when you last seen them and I have stated over 1 year ago they required me to go and seem my consultant before they would reissue my licence went to my appointment and the DVLA reissued me my licence. The whole process just took a bit longer. No complaints here they were just doing there job. Hopefully all things will go well this year as its up for renewal again
 
My sayings are:
Under 4 on the floor;
Over 5.0 to drive.

The reason being I act this way is becsuse meters have up to 20% error rate. 4.0 on your meter could actually be 3.2. Having almost lost my licence a few years ago, even though I had stopped and was testing it.. No way would I ever drive if under 5.0....

Yes they do ask if you've been seen in the last 12 months, I did wonder what the consequences would be if you put No. I sent my renewal off at the beginning of the week, just realised earlier today that I didn't include both parts of my driving licence, debating whether to send them off now or wait for the DVLA to reply and request them.

I have never sent back my old licence and they have never asked for it when I havent, apart from in the original form. Its handy if you carry the card for id purposes as it means if you lose your wallet its not your current licence that you are losing.

Thanks Malky. I was just on to the DVLA today as I've not heard anything in over 4 weeks, they send it was being dealt with by the medical dept and I may not here for some time, I was told I wasn't to worry as my licence doesn't expire till June and even then I would still be allowed to drive (if I'd not heard back) as they are processing the renewal , they made no mention of sending my old licence in so I'll not bother now.
 
I am happy about the 10 year ruling. I think that has been done to bring us in line with the EC. When I went to live in the Netherlands I was obliged to change my driving licence, and was given a licence valid for 10 years, and no horrific forms.
When I returned to the UK my diabetes was rather unstable. I needed to change my driving licence back to a UK licence. My consultant at Guys/Thomas' advised that I wait until my diabetes stabilised before sending in my replacement/renewal request. It appears that the DVLC does contact the diabetic team, and what they say DOES matter. When I was given the OK by the team my licence was exchangedin a very short time - just a couple of weeks. I was told that I could drive without a copy of the licence whilst it was being processed - however, as a Londoner I do not possess a car, and when I need one I rent. I may well have had problems if I needed to rent a car in the replacement period.
It appears that the law regarding licences is being brought more into line with the EC regulations, I would favour the licence being totally replaced by a EU licence. And why do I have a plasitic photo-ID AND a stupid paper licence that is rather large for my wallet, and is becoming tattier by the day.
In my experience it is not the DVLC but insurance companies that are the biggest problem for those with diabetes. I bought my first vehicle - a Honda 90 motocycle - in 1973. Licence no problem. I had real difficulty getting insurance - and had to make use of a broker.

Still trying to get my LGV license back. Been going on since Jan 2013. I attended a medical at DVLA request July 1st which was fine. Since then, I have been informed that they require another medical from another independant specialist. I now have to go to Welwyn Garden City end of Sep ! This is a 90min drive each way ! Right pain to be honest !

Make someone drive for 3 hours to see if they are fit to drive? Did you get the license?
