Hi, I was diagnosed back on February 23rd with my HBA1C at 76, had another blood test on March 7th which read 69. It was agreed I would come back in 3 months for more bloods as I was determined to do my best to get this down without meds. I’ve just seen my June results on the NHS app and it’s now 49. I’m really pleased obviously but know I still have work to do, if anything it’s given me more motivation to continue with the low carbs, but up my exercise as well. I started well with that but after having a cold I haven’t done nearly as much. I have a follow up call with the nurse this Thursday so hoping she’s good for me to continue as I am, I’d love to be in the pre diabetic range come Christmas.

Hi @Andy0182 - well done you!

If you were in my country (Aotearoa/New Zealand) you'd already be in the prediabetic range! Just, but there.

The official way of talking about it, especially if you were diagnosed straight to type two diabetes, as it were, is 'intermediate hyperglycemia'. Yeah - you probably aren't going to throw that around the dinner table (unless your dinner table is full of endocrinologists? :D )- but it states what is going on in one's blood glucose regulation system mighty fine, imho. (The trouble with the word 'prediabetes' is it makes it sound like you will inevitably move into the diabetes proper range, which it is not - inevitable that is.)

Regarding exercise - I read somewhere, don't know where, that physical activity has an average lowering of HBA1c of 5 numbers, in the IFCC way of measuring (which you are using, and I certainly use - not the American et al % system). That has roughly been my experience, everytime I go all out in the exercise department. It works much better for lowering my HBA1c than metformin did, that is for sure. (HBA1c lowering response to metformin is very variable.) Anyway - yeah - well done you.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for replying. I’m feeling more positive for the future already, just gotta stick with it keep pushing!

Don't forget, that 49 is affected by the earlier months where you were starting at 69. So you are almost certainly actually lower than 49, but the older blood cells need to be cleared. So in about 2 months time that figure will probably be non diabetic numbers. Well done, keep it up, you should be well chuffed.

Just had my review and the nurse was very happy with my progress, annual checkup in January will be my next one, and told me to continue with my diet and exercise. I have lost a stone since I was weighed in March, so steady progress there also.
