As ever I am optimising and who better to advise than you lovely bunch.

My question relates to nuts, fruit and veg intake for those with a HbA1c of 35 (5.4%) or less, how much do you have. I am not looking for exact measurements in Oz or grams (unless you measure), just wanting to see if there is a correlation between lower numbers and nuts, fruit and veg.

I have 2 to 3 larger strawberries, 5-6 raspberries and black berries and around 10 blueberries. On around half my meals between a quarter and a third of a plate of mixed low gi veg and around three quarters of a cup of mixed nuts.

I am not sure if I qualify to post here as I was never formerly diagnosed as Type 2 but my HbA1c is today down to 36. I currently eat fruit and vedge in the kind of quantities that you have just itemised. Remarkably similar actually. Plus a couple of clementines or an apple and a clementine each day.

I like your wording “optimising” a concept not fully grasped by some. Nice to see some optimising as opposed to flat out minimising.

Edited to add that if it wasn’t for Christmas I strongly suspect my figure would be 35 or lower.

I qualify for your question in that I have maintained my HbA1c at 35 or below for over a year now, however I do take a modest dose of Metformin in addition to low carbing. My intake is similar to yours, 3 or four strawberries (depending on size) at breakfast, 5 or 6 raspberries or 8 to 10 blueberries at lunchtime, a third to half a plateful of salad or veggies at lunch and dinner and 25g of nuts a day as a snack.

Thanks for your response. I am of the opinion that we can have a foundation of LCHF / Keto foods to choose from, and then based on tastes, allergies or other criteria such as exercise, eating to the meter, we can customise our diet to meet our goals. So for example my fbg this morning was 4.4 (which is high normal for me, as I didn't do my usual level of exercise). I had 3 pancakes with berries and chicken curry (loads) with nuts.

Excellent. Well you will have to excuse me as I am not using a meter at the moment. But I am using other criteria to arrive at a judgement. I like your approach and it suits my approach to.

LCHF in the manner you described has worked very well for me in a short space of time.

I've always eaten tons of vegetables/salad along with protein/fat.

I've managed to maintain a HbA1c in the 20's for over 3 years whilst doing so.

As for berries and nuts. I eat them sometimes, less often now than I did when I was first diagnosed, we buy a 150g bag of M&S Mixed Roasted and Salted Nuts most weeks, but HID eats most of them so I probably consume less than 50g a week.

I try to OMAD most work days and try not to snack too much.

Thank you for the detail.

Incidentally @Mbaker I have a couple of suggestions. Can I message you with them please?

No nuts. No fruit. Palmful of overground green vegetables most days but not always.

I swerve nuts because they’re morish, and even the low carb varieties are are only low carb if you don’t eat a kilo of them. Zero fruit because it’s the perfect storm of glucose and fructose. Literally designed by evolution to increase insulin resistance, and the micronutrient content is vastly overstated.

My next A1c is currently estimated at 27-28mmol/mol

Like Jim. No fruit at all. Do eat nuts. Kp peanuts specifically as they are 5g/100. Nothing else. Some can be stunningly high. Especially if they are flavored.
Do cook with peanut butter, use full sweetness to chicken and curries.

Other than that overground veg and meat. 1c of 31. That was after Christmas so could be lower.

Will have 50 or 60 g of raspberries (frozen usually) with cream or yoghurt once or twice a week and maybe one pack of roasted, salted macadamias (100g) once or twice a month.
These days no veg.
2019 have averaged daily carbs at 8.4 g per day
2018 when eating veg averaged 14g per day
2017 only have data from18 Feb onwards 17g per day average

Thanks Jim, I had thoughts about the berries and liver impact.

Thanks Mr, great information. I am seeing a pattern after talking to @Goonergal at the APPG yesterday. It appears that those plus or -2 from a HbA1c of 30, either don't do any or many berries or nuts, both of which I do everyday. I have a feeling those berries are sticking glucose to my haemoglobin longer than they should. As I feel ok (great actually), provided I remain stable at 35 next test, I will continue my regime, but with a 25% cut in intake.

Sounds like an interesting experiment. Nuts I find very hard to limit so I eat a whole pack rarely and then just don't buy any more! Didn't have any of either during the beef only Jan and to be honest didn't miss them..
Oops just remembered I had one bag of macadamias on my birthday mid Jan

I eat blueberries, raspberries, strawberries daily with Greek yoghurt for breakfast and with my lunch. I also have the occasional orange and plum and cheese and apple - all of which I have tested and am ok with. I eat most vegetables inc sweet corn and peas.
