HbA1c

Can I ask what low carb stuff works well n an actifry? I am really hoping that you say delicious low carb chips. I really really reallly miss chips.

If there is something I" really really miss " and its proper food as opposed to junk food, then my personal mantra is that I can have some now and again, but if I do I must do it sensibly - so for example I did have fish and chips - but the chips were the proper large wedge fresh cooked in proper lard variety not the packaged stuff. I ate the meal before I was going to do a lot of exercise and I left it for a long time before I ate again. I guess I've eaten chips maybe three times in the last year.

My thinking is that if I allow myself this kind of treat occasionally, then maybe I will find it easier to stick to the whole way of life long term.

Other things I think just have to be gone for good - ie crunchies - which I can't equate to being worth the effort.
Interestingly my young non diabetic friend who is wearing a libre came home astonished yesterday, her blood sugars stay rock solid around 4. Yesterday she ate one boiled sugar sweet ( about 5 g) her blood glucose shot upto 8.5 before coming back down. Its clear that humans are "Very " sensitive to sugar even in minimal quantities .

Unfortunately I have the will power of a person with absolutely no will power! I really admire those who can just have something now and again, or have the better version of it. I am trying to find anew way of eating that I can stick to. Not so difficult because my diet was so very bad that most other things are better. I dont really miss much of my old food.

Except chips!

I was convinced that I was missing the food of old (Hah! Only diagnosed four months ago).
The thing is that when I have had my wobbles and given in and had e.g a supermarket pork pie, a scotch egg or a bag of crisps I have found them bland and uninteresting. I pinched a chip from my son's plate one day (home made whoppers cooked in lard) and thought 'why I have missed chips?'. So for me the wobbles served a purpose in that they proved that the junk food isn't how I thought it tasted so I will not be tempted again.

There are some caveats to that, though. Namely, profiteroles, mince pies and home made choc chip brioche....sigh roll on Christmas!

I think we all have that "one " thing we hanker after, I could leave all o your sweet things, but I'd hate to lose the odd chip shop fish in batter - strange world isn't it !

I havn't had a chippy fish in batter since I learned to make home made. There's just no comparison, for me. I plan to have it again after I stabilise my bg but alongside salad. I miss the Harry Ramsden's that was in the next town but do not miss it enough to go to next nearest one.

Oh my......mincemeat pies with an icing top I will have to try out low carb versions. Icing is easy - will do the cream cheese version. Will see how low I can get the rest.

My other 'miss' is a Morrisons scotch pie.

And since you reminded me about them I had celeriac chips tonight with gammon steak. Hubby even tasted one and said he expected them to be horrible but they are actually fine. That's progress.

I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago my HbA1c was 102 and my blood sugars were 28 was feeling really awful. Have been put on metformin and my blood sugars are around 10 today and am up to a dose of 2 tablets aiming to get to 4 a day, my dr is unsure on whether I’m type 1 or type 2 as I’m in between so waiting to see a specialist, this is all a minefield and a learning curve, I am overweight so my 1st task is loosing lbs and eating well, I’m struggling to find low carb family friendly foods any advice on bringing these high bs’s down? Thanks in advance

Hey Kim ;

Almost carb free foods are f.x. ; cheese , fish without crumble coating , meat eggs , Lidl Protein Rolls , avocado , peaunuts , Macadamia nuts hazel nuts and walnuts , and there is only few carbs in tomatoes and. Cucumbers and mushrooms , you can learn a lot og the low carbing eating style in here Try a few days on the almost no-carb foods and you’ll bring your blood glucose down if you are a type 2 diabetic , if you are in fact type 1 you’ll need insuline and Then you will have to learn to twist insuline with the adequate amount of proteins and carbs instead ,

Try to take a deep breath and tell yourself that you’ll learn to cope like all of us have done before you and know we understand What chock you are probably in right now .... send you a virtual hug here you’ll learn it all in some weeks or months and This is a great forum for help and support and discussions

The thing I miss most is a toasted fruit bun with butter on it. After my last Hba1c I had two for my breakfast, and 2 hours later I was 8.5, so not horrendous, but higher than I would like.

You will not regret cooking the chicken - and of course as the one cooking it, the skin is fair game - a lot of mine evaporates though.
Most mysterious. ;)
Mushrooms cooked in the fryer after removing the chicken are delicious too. I get the small misshapen ones but still button shaped so they roll around easily.
I was prepared to have to resist the temptation to eat chips, though, and was rather gratified to find that there was no need.
It is, perhaps only the thought of eating chips which is the problem - the reality was a real surprise, and not a good one. I did check with the DH that the chips were as they should be - and got an odd look.

Had the chicken last night. And yes, the mysterious chicken skin evaporation epidemic has hit kent. Husband was a bit upset that his chicken was naked. I told him it was for his own good. :)

I'm lucky - mine are prescribed but many on here self fund because they can't get them on prescription. I do self fund Libre sensors. They give a different answer to testing strips as they measure different things but it does let you see what different foods do to your BG as they measure constantly and you can see what spikes. Saves the fingers! You can always try reasoning with your Doctor as well. You need to do a lot of testing at first to find out what foods affect you but even when you build up knowledge you still need some daily checks. Even with the Libre on I still jab 2 or 3 times a day.

Libre sensors? Never heard of those, I’m seeing the diabetic nurse next week so hoping she’ll provide test strips without a fuss.

I found it essential to cook a batch of chicken thighs yesterday as they were getting close to date. Will be having them at late lunchtime but a crispy skin vanished on the way to the fridge.

Yummy

I lack plenty of willpower ‍♀️

It's a flash sensor that you wear for 14 days. Subject to local health boards they have been approved on the NHS for insulin dependent diabetics from 1 November.
They measure differently to finger jabs but I find them great for keeping track of what certain foods do to me. A lot of us on here self fund but they are not cheap at £47 VAT free but that monitors continuously for 2 weeks. My fingers were a mess so it saves them.
Above is their website so you can read about them plus there is a whole thread I ran called Life with Libre which runs from when I first started using them and the problems I encountered. I still jab - just not as often. Personally , I think you should just concentrate on getting strips out of them for now.
