ive been type2 for 2 years roughly and my hbaic has always been 8.00 to my last check which was 9.1 and doing the diet and taking tabs which are meterformin and glplazide what moe can i do anyone tell me pls my doc has now threaton me that if i dont get them down he wil put me on injections which mean i will lose my job as i am a bus driver

your dr shouldnt be threatening you at all, i would see a different one, if u are eating as you should be and are exercising and your blood is still rising then you need a medication review as u may need a change, what is your daily food regime and what blood readings are u getting? :D

i walk alot cant do a lot of exercise as by the time i fin shift im too tired to do anything i have breakfast in morn usally at 5.oo oclock then dinner around 11ish then tea roughly arounde 6 or 7 ish

brekkie i have cornflakes with banana din i have sanwichs tea i have either white meat or red or fish with patatoes or salad

a lot of our type 2,s cannot cope with many carbs, the cornflakes and banana are full of sugar, as is the bread and potatoes,
i would suggest cutting down on these as i suspect this may be where your problems lay :D if u need to know anything else just ask :D

Hi,jtuddy,i would also look at your bread you make sarnies with, best of both doesnt raise me too high and I have a similar lifestyle and eating habits to yourself. I am on 4x500 metformin, 80mg glicazide,40 mg simvastatin.i also take 2 fish oil caps,1 vit B tab and 2 glucosamine. these are split AM and PM.
breakfast - tea and 2 slices toast - 05.30
lunch - 2 apples and either salad or 2 rounds sandwich with meat filling - approx 12.30
dinner- anything but minimal rice and pasta and mash potato, roast dinner doesn't do much harm for me - 18.30 - 19.00
i walk the dog in am before i go off to work and i walk quite a bit during day.i am 6 ft and 14 stone
and although my BG was quite high when DX in nov, 08 it is now down to 6.6 so it does come down, i totally agree with others that looking at what you eat and how it affects you is very important and TEST. i thought nimble was great until i had 3 slices and my BG went through the roof. i also need to be careful as with glicazide i am dropping into 4's in evening so don't eat too late and keep a can of pop with you, just in case, best of luck with it and i'm sure you will get there, lol mano . :D :D

Hey jtuddy.

Like tha man says, you gotta test, test, test and then test again. Ya know it makes sense.

These are all the things that put my BG up really high.

I started by removing all added sugar and what I considered to be empty carbs and added fresh and raw while I looked around at diets. I also got a meter and test after I have eaten, because I want to know what food does once I have eaten it.

I started thinking a low Glycaemic Index diet was the way to go and now I'm lower carbing. My HbA1c is coming down and my daily readings are a lot lower too. I'm hoping to be much closer to 6% on my next HbA1c (down from 7% last time). I have also lost a lot of weight - that helps the insulin resistance - but I've got a lot more to loose. I'm not on any medication.

Have a look around the forums, especially the diet ones. Whatever diet you opt for, you will end up reducing your carbs substantially if you want to be a succesful diabetic.

Hya Spiral babe. You sure know loads. You give it out, let's hope the man listens to you. Good advice here.

Hi,

I agree with what the others have all said. First of all, it is important that you do some testing to see what gives you peaks after eating. As far as food is concerned keep away from cereals of any sort for breakfast - instead go for egg and bacon or tomatoes or something like that. Cut down on the bread - again especially at breakfast but also at other meals. At dinner, cut down on the potatoes and also such things as rice or pasta. I think that you will find that all of these types of food will very likely put up your blood glucose levels - perhaps the increases will be higher in the morning than later in the day.

Eat loads of fruit and vegetables - more than the standard message given out of "five a day".

Start slimming to lose weight because in doing that you will reduce your eating of a lot of the problem foods.

I've sorted most of my problems out by doing this - HbA1c down from 9.4 to 5.3% - cholesterol down from 4.2 to 3.1 - blood pressure down to 105/60 from a very high level originally - and weight down by approximately 30 kgs (more than four stone) in the last nine months.

It is possible - and my job didn't depend on any of this! Quite simply, I wanted to keep clear of the quite horrible diabetic complications that can develop if we don't control our blood glucose levels within safe limits.

i would have thought your test result of 8 was not too bad.as i have a hgv1 and my result was 7 and i am not even on tabs,gp said that is ok

Hi m_cooper.

An HbA1c result of 8% or even 7% (fair) would have me running for the meds and/or a diet change. Those figures equate to an average Bg level of between 8 and 10 mmol/l. My daily average is around 5 - 6 mmol/l. and dropping.

Take a look at this link about HbA1c.
http://medweb.bham.ac.uk/easdec/prevent ... _hba1c.htm

In no way are either readings good. In a Diabetic a reading of 6.5 % and below is considered good, lower is even better. When my readings were 8 % I was put on a bucket of meds to try and reduce the numbers, diet finally did the trick. Even when my readings were down in the 6 %'s my Endo still was striving for better numbers. I think your GP is being complacent.

A non - Diabetic would be looking at readings of between 3.5 to 5.5 %. Remember an HbA1c is only an average, nothing like as good as instant results from daily testing.

You will be able to lower your blood sugar by eating less carbs particularly refined carbs, that is white bread, white rice and ordinary pasta. Bananas convert to sugar too so by having cornflakes with the banana you are adding to the sugar and your blood glucose will rise and cornflakes is not a good choice of cereal either. Try eating a wholemeal cereal without the banana, and if you are eating breakfast early perhaps the banana later in the morning. Wholemeal bread is better than white bread. Nuts are good for you too. If you are overweight not too many nuts as they are fattening. Eating less potatoes and instead vegetables that are not root vegetables is also helpful. As others have mentioned getting a blood glucose meter and testing your blood sugar before eating and then 2 hours afterwards will show you how different foods affect your blood glucose. I will add that fruit juice really affects blood sugar too.

You are using quite a lot of antidiabetic medicines there. It's not really any wonder that bread isn't spiking you. The meds are preventing that, as they should. If you wanted to cut the medication down, you'd need to cut the carbs down, either by changing your menu or your portion size.
