Heavy cold

Morning everyone. Only diagnosed two weeks ago and not seen dietician or anything yet. However I have had a very bad cold with sore throat for a week now and have not turned a corner. Firstly I never get colds and secondly if I get a little sniffle then it is usually gone in a day with echinacea and fresh pineapple. I have been worried all week what I can and cannot eat and yesterday went ahead and had fresh pineapple but then had brown toast with it to try and balance the sugar and also had a spoonful of Manuka in some lemons. I am not sure if I am making it worse or better but all I know is I am not getting any better. Is this something to expect now, being diabetic? Before I got this I was concerned that my temp was only 33 degrees and even now it's only 34 and I feel awful. Hope this makes sense to someone. Does metformin affect your immune system by any chance?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, ignore the last poster !

I am on intense immunosuppresants and have been for 18 years for a heart transplant in 1994. Been on Metformin for last 10 years, my immune system is still intact and all my signs are good. Including liver and kidneys which is a bit of a surprise to me because I drink like a fish.

Perhaps you have had the dreaded flu jab, I've refused for 20 years - no problems.

You can be sure those meds are the culprit...too many instances...in the end all renal failures/kidney failures comes from it

I would pay no attention to what this person is saying!!

I'm on metformin and insulin. I can only speak from my experience with a cold. I never take any flu/cold remedies I don't believe in them I only use paracetamol if I think it's necessary. My colds usually last upto 3 weeks and they did before I was diabetic. Also as is normal my BS levels go into double figures and I can never get them down until my cold has gone.

The first thing I would advise is not to worry too much as that will cause your BGs to rise .Drink lots of fluids hot water with a slice of lemon is good and you can drink it all day without any rises in levels .If you feel like adding a slug of whiskey to it at the end of the day that is ok I had a very good family doctor when we had such things ,he was a scotsman and he was a great believer in a hot toddy "it wont make the cold go away any faster but it will make you feel better" paracetamol is probably the best type of pain killer it will do just as good a job as the so called cold cures and cost a lot less Best of all pamper yourself (or get someone else to pamper you) Hope you soon feel better

You are probably feeling a bit traumatised still since you have only been recently diagnosed as diabetic, isnt it so unfair that these cold bugs seem to pounce on us just when we are feeling a bit under the weather anyway, oh no, they come and make us worse.
Dont worry about the metformin, its quite a good drug, and wont have any negative affect on your immune system, if it helps to keep your blood sugar at a good level it will indirectly help to boost your immune system.
The echinacea is good, and have plenty of warm drinks, herbal or fruit tea, green tea, make hot lemon and ginger tea, heat up coconut milk, add cinnamon or ginger and sweetener, its very soothing and anti inflammatory/antiviral, not sure about the pineapple, you need to test your bg to make sure it doesnt cause you unwanted spikes.

Eat fresh berries, and dare I say it again, but try Sambucol, the elderberry extract is proven to reduce the duration of cold/flu and boosts the immune system, you can get it sugarfree or in capsules and this autumn you could collect the ripe elderberries and freeze them, they are lovely stewed with a little sweetener and cinnamon or vanilla and stirred into yoghurt or with a bit of cream or with low carb ice cream.

I hope you get better soon x x

Oh what kind advice from everyone thank you. I never take cold remedies so that's a plus. Just that I have never had a cold this bad for this long!! As for checking my BLood sugar, I don't have a meter. I asked for one an Doc said type 2 don't need unless you want to have a play??!!! Basically I was told I was diabetic, put on metformin and sent on my merry way. No diet sheet or advice. Thank goodness for this forum xxx
