I was diagnosed with Type II Diabitis in 2011. My doctor gave me 6 months to change my diet and reduce my sugar level. It worked and until last month, watched what I ate and had no problem. Middle of January I started with pain in the middle of my abdomen, next morning the pain had got worse and moved to my right side. Called my doctor who arrived within 30 minutes, he called an ambulance and I was taken to A&E where they diagonosed Sepsis. I was in hospital being treated for 9 days. During this time they monitored my blood sugars which were staying around 20-22, on the day of my discharge I was seen by a diabetic nurse, who prescribed glipizide 80mg in the morning. My sugar levels stayed high, so I phoned the diabetic nurse who advised double your dose. My level did drop into the mid, high teens, and single figures first thing in the morning.
I am following a healthy diet, not over eating as have no appertite. I feel I have no backup, follow up , just left to cope. I cannot exercise yet as the Sepsis has left me very underweight and I have lost my muscles.

Hi Welcome :)

im sorry youve been through this :(

im not at all surprised you have been left to cope alone :(

glad you found your way here and hope you come to feel that your not alone anymore, were all in this together, there are some very clever folks here that can help out with any questions you have

best of luck

Andy

As far as I understand, sepsis is caused by a bacterial infection which causes a response via your blood chemistry which can actually overwhelm some of your other organs. Have you been given any indication as to whether your current high glucose levels are a temporary reaction to the sepsis or permanent due to any damage? I suspect they haven't actually tested and are just waiting to see. Presumably they have done liver and kidney function tests? Did they bother to give you the results?

Hello, been told Sepsis has damaged my liver, got biopsy this week, and stopped my pancreas working. But if that is true, why did my sugar levels drop when dose increased.

So sorry you have had a bad time hope you feel better soon You have come to the right place for support so please feel that you can ask anything you want to and you certainly will not be ignored there is alway someone on the forum to answer you folk here are very caring and supportive

hi

Welcome. I hope we can help you on the road to recovery, sounds like you have had an awful experience.

Yes it all happened so quick, I was always a healthy active person, then in a matter of hours The Sepsis struck, came out of hospital 9 days later over a stone lighter, and so weak and tired. Then found it has messed up my Diabitis. Hoping when I get well, and stronger my Diabitis may improve.

Hi and welcome Peterwoo, I had sepsis last year so know exactly what you are going through, have they referred you to a physio? If not ask your GP if you are strong enough, It helps, you can have a physio come to your home and do very small stretching and circulatory exercises, you can get transport to collect you and take you to hospital appointments also when you are a bit stronger.

sounds like a really rough time for you sending you lots love xx

Hello, can I ask what caused your Sepsis, and how long before you managed to gain any strength. Also did you have problems with night sweats. I was thinking of doing exercise, when I feel stronger.

You'd have to ask them for an explanation or, what they meant by that. As far as I know, glipizide directly interacts with the pancreas and the pancreas has to be working to some extent for it to be effective. If it had totally packed up, I guess you'd need insulin, so it is a confusing explanation.

Yes I agree, totally confused, seen a second GP who said I need to build up my strength, and worry about my sugars, when I am well and active again.

Hi. Whilst building up your strength etc is right, you do need to avoid sugars regularly in the teens and above. If the Glipzide doesn't work then going onto insulin for a temporary period might be useful. Do continue monitoring your sugars and ensure the doc takes some action if the sugar remains too high as that will be doing damage

Sorry you have such a stressful time Peter, hope you soon improve re your physical health, sending best wishes to you and hope that you soon get things sorted x

Hi again Peter, The cause of my sepsis was that I caught MSRI when I went into hospital to have an operation to remove a cancerous tumour and I got a wound infection which almost shut down the whole of my organs, it spread to my spleen, kidneys, liver, lungs etc and I had a blood clot travelling towards my heart which they managed to disperse and then had a stroke but at least the infection has gone. Yes I had night sweats and burning sensation although I suspect that was to do with my diabetes. The infection (sepsis) itself took two weeks on three powerful different anbiotics but months to regain my strength but everybody is different and heal at different rates plus I had complications via the stroke and heart condition so baby steps, do what you feel up to and listen to your body when it's tired. I hope you feel better soon :)

Thank you for replying, yes we are all different, I have liver biopsy Thursday as sepsis has damaged. Will get better I know.

Hi Peterwoo

I'm a fairly newbie here myself too. Pre-diabetic, not diabetic but because I've been reading up as much as I possibly can to find out what's what and how to control by blood sugars by diet. I've also been on a walking away from Diabetes Course (though by the time I got on it I was in a better place to anser some of the other folks questions than were those who were actually delivering the course (office bods not medical pros)

what I came across that stress, both physical from operative trauma and mental stress can really elevate blood sugar levels. I guess its to do with the hormones the body produces other than insulin. It may be that it reduces the production of insulin. There is sooo much on the DUK website other than this forum you that you should be able to find answers to many of the questions that you have.

When you go to the doc or hospital or wherever and you don't get answers, proper answers to your Qs keep digging away until you do. ou may find it helps if you write all your questions down so you don't forget anything you want to ask, but also leave a big enough space to write the answers you get

Hope this helps and hope you have a speedy recovery both physically and bs - wise
