Tablets (oral)
I am new here...However I am not new to Type 2. 19 years of it..I have been on every Diabetic pill in exsistance...GLP inhibitors...and finally insulin. In March of last year I started a carnivore type diet. I have remained faithful to this way of eating for the duration till present. I have also began exercising....I have lost 51 lbs..gotten off of insulin and Glpizide...Still taking Metformin 1000 mgs daily...My fasting glucose runs around 95 to 105..My highest glucose in the daytime runs 120 after meals..I have also gotten my blood pressure down and came off of three medications..I still take 50 mgs of metoprolol....I am going to cut my metformin back to 500 mgs starting tonight...I will be very closely monitoring my blood sugar...I have three glucometers..2 of which are Contour next..they all typically read very close to each other..I will be stopping by here just to see how everyone does there Management...Oh and almost forgot to mention the fact that not one dr that has treated me in the last 19 years ever mentioned that type 2 was reversable...Go figure

That last bit? Likely because most doctors (specialists included) are only aware T2 is progressive. Which it is, unless you, you know, try a low carb diet... Like Carnivore... Which they would likely find extreme, and tell you you need carbs to survive (which you don't, from an outside source; the body makes glucose when it needs it). Eight years ago I got told, when trying low carbing and Keto, that I didn't have the spine for it. Those people spent less than 10 minutes with me and called me spineless. Lovely. And wrong. I adored Carnivore, but I'm one of those who'll start churning out a certain type of kidney stone when on it, so I try to get something going with keto, intermittent fasting and a slight lean toward carnivore at the moment. It's a puzzle, sometimes, and right now I'm trying to get the balance right again, as I was focusing more on the kidney stones and less on the diabetes these past two years, which meant putting weight back on, regrowing the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease fat deposits, and hitting a HbA1c of 42 again. Which I kind of took as a personal affront, haha. So when you ask how others manage? In whatever way we can make it manageable, much like you've done! We're all different, really, so one might do better on a carni/keto/LCHF/IF/mediterranean/scandinavian/paleo/vegan/etc diet, while another might fare well on a diet mixed with meds, others can't diet and have to go the med way entirely... Whatever the reason, it's not a one-size-fits all. So it's testing, testing, testing, and being your own guinea pig for the bulk of it, really... Finding out what co-morbidities to also take into account, as well as lifestyle, medication for other ailments, your personal needs and whatever else... What works for one, might not work for another.

I think you've done very well for yourself, especially considering you've had little to no medical support in this...! Anyway, welcome, and if you have any questions, throw them out there; there's usually someone here with an answer or two. :)

That's a really inspiring story @MG426 - I simply cannot imagine what it must have been like 19 years ago - I largely had the support of my GP, but fighting against the entire medical mindset must have been tough, hats off to you. There are some cracks in that dogma these days; I recently went to an appointment with a nutritionist, pretty much expecting a fight, but coming out feeling like there had been a meeting of minds.

He was even of the opinion that intermittent fasting should be offered as a first treatment option for newly diagnosed T2 - imagine that!

It will be trailblazers like you that we will have to thank when this kind of thinking becomes the norm.

Thank you for the responses..It has been a struggle..Some days things are wonderful..some days not..I am making progress though and that keeps me focuseed....This morning I measured at 110 mgs/dl....Its the way we measure in the US.. I only took 500 mgs of metformin last night before bed..At bedtime I was at 95 Mgs...( dawn effect..?)...I usually walk for a hr in the morning..But since it feels like the North pole outside and the sidewalks are snow covered..so it will be wall pushups and squats till the weather behaves..Walking really truly does wonders for my blood sugar..The best thing for me is walking after dinner..I am doing One meal a day and intermittant fasting,,,It has been easy for me as I have gotten into a groove with my eating....Lots of eggs,,sausage,,ground beef...even hotdogs..reading every label carefully.....NO SEED OILS...! I prepare my own meal every day..The wife and my daughter are Great cooks..And every so often they make something that I eat with them..Most of the time I just eat it as leftovers the next day..I am retired so I can do anything I want in regard to Blood sugar...My dr is still in the stone age in regard to treatment of type two...I may need to chage drs..as all they seem to know is Pills and More Pills...I will say for the record that After 19 years of being a diabetic and taking every pill known to man for diabetes...up to and including insulin..I can say with certainty there is noe medication currently on the market that lowers Blood sugar as well as a no carb way of eating...I am 8 months into this and the plan is to continue for the balance of my life...Once again ....Its very doable and I am aming to win...Thanks to all of you,,,!

Walking is very helpful indeed, but you can't outrun a bad diet, as is often said here. While the walking helps, it's the diet that is truly moving mountains, as you've found as well. Personally, I would let go of the idea that there might be a doc in general practice in your area that "believes" in low to no carb diets. They're extremely rare, and I don't know about the US, but changing practices is far from easy sometimes. Unless you already know of one, it's very much a needle in a haystack. You already know what you respond well to, just go with it. Just don't forget the organ meats, like liver. Scurvy does happen in this day and age, and that's where the vitamin C hides. ;) The doc's not going to throw more medication at you when your blood sugars are likely better than those of half the people over 50 in their practice, are they? (Just a wild guess, but you get the idea). They might not be supportive, but if you get a HbA1c once a year, get all other required checks done... You don't need them for anything else. You've got this covered already.
