Hi, I am Megan, I am 16 and have been diagnosed with type 1 today. My mom, dad and me don't know what to do, what I can eat, what to expect. I am very sporty, into athletics and train 4 times a week, it is my life and don't know what to expect. Found the site tonight and thought I would say hello.

Meg

Hello Meg and welcome to the forum :) There is a lot you will want to know and you have come to the right place. We're a friendly lot and will answer all your questions so ask what you like :!:

Hiya Megan and welcome to the forum.

A suggestion, but just a suggestion ...why not get Mum & Dad (or just one of them) to join here as well and let them ask and learn as the days pass.

It wont be easy for any of your family, especially you, but with our years of experience I'm sure all the members here will do all we can to advise and help where we are able.

Hi, i only found out not too long ago also, its amazing how fast you adapt and so far I have gave up nothing! (ok apart from drinking diet drinks rather than normal) other than this.. business as usual (I had a generaly healthy lifestyle anyways, not perfect but not totaly bad).

My diabetic nurse said to me, just carry on as normal. We will work out the injections around you, your life stays the same, we just change the injections to suit :P Phew! (however i wouldnt expect this advice to apply if you live on cake and redbull lol)

If you only found out today, maybe like what happened with me, they dont want to stuff you with loads of info on day 1, 1st objective is to get your levels normal, then teach you about adjusting your dose to suit your food, then how to deal with it if your ill or do sports and so on. But i suppose everyones experience is slightly different.

This is a great site tho, helped me no end

hya meg,
welcome to the forum, ask as many questions as you need to :D

Hi Meg,

Diabetes shouldn't stop you doing anything you want to do (except join the armed forces and in some countries go diving). You will find many athletes at the elite level with Type 1 Diabetes and quite a few celebrities also (that guy from the Jonas Brother's springs to mind).

You should be able to eat pretty well everything but you might need to watch the portion size. It is easier to drink diet products that are sugar free rather than do more injections.

Make diabetes work in with you so you never have to feel like you are missing out. Carry lots of stuff around with you so you can stay out and do whatever you want. Stuff - I mean food, testing kit, insulin, hypo treatment.

Take it easy in the early days and don't expect great control to come immediately. It takes time.

Welcome Meg

Im not T1 so cant offer advice, but you have my best wishes that you will get your head around it all pretty quickly :)

Hi Megan.
Welcome to the Forum. Have a good look around and if you have questions then ask away. You might want to visit the Type 1 and possibly the Diabetes Youth Club sections. There is some 'Basic Advice for Newly Dignosed Diabetics' at the top of this section which will go some way to helping you get control of your Diabetes.........make sure you discuss everything with your GP/Nurse before doing anything drastic.
