Hello all,
I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in February but am really only just getting my head round it all !!

I had some blood tests taken & was waiting for the results so went online to make an appointment with my GP. That was when & how I discovered I had Diabetes , the Doctor had made an appointment for me to see the diabetic Nurse & there it was on my screen , shock wasn't the word. Every thing connected to my diagnoses turned into a complete shambles!

I was literally told to go away & deal with it & come back in 3 months. No blood monitor , very brief diet advice.
Once I had come to terms with it all then I started taking action.
I complained to my surgery about the way I found out & the little amount of help I got etc . ( I at least got a written apology for how the surgery had handled my case )
I asked for blood Monitor & would not take no for an answer ( I am only allowed 50 strips per month so I buy any extras myself)
This week I have finally been granted an appointment with a dietician as after 12 weeks on metaformin I have not lost any weight & my levels are still very erratic. The professionals are worried if they change the medication or swop me to insulin then I will put even more weight on.
Also off to have more blood tests this week to see if my levels have dropped overall.

It is really getting me down but I know I have no choice but to deal with it .
I am sure diet is the key but as a veggie its a little more difficult so will hop over to the diet section to pick up some tips .

I have read a few posts & am shocked to see that so many people have had dreadful experiences with their diagnosis & general treatment & help of their condition . Thank goodness for these wonderful forums !

Angie

Welcome to the forum. I will tag @daisy1 to let you have the advice for new members. Like you I am a newly diagnosed member, and also a vegetarian. Many members follow a low carb higher fat diet which makes perfect sense as carbs turn to sugar. There is loads of advice on here and purplekat on the diet section is collating loads of great veggie recipes. Still finding my feet but there is fab support on the forum. Good luck

Hi @jellyang and @SueB743 :D

Another T2 vegetarian here. The low carb food is fab so at least you don't have to worry about that. Have a look around the forum and take in as much as you can. Shout if you have any questions.

Nice to know I'm not the only Vegetarian . I am still playing trial & error as any attempt to lower my carbs signifgantly have just resulted in Hypos which apparently shouldn't happen if you are taking metaformin . I always did like to be awkward ;-)

Welcome to the forum @jellying. Another veggie here, and yes, that adds some challenges to low carbing, but you will manage fine. It takes a wee while to get used to but before you know it, it will be second nature and you will be in control of this beast.
There are still lots of recipe ideas for us veggies in the recipe section and through time you will adapt your own recipes, google searches bring up some delights too.

If you have been running high numbers before diagnosis then they start to suddenly come down, I have read it can feel like a hypo even though you are not dangerously low. It's called a false hypo. Not great all the same. Good that you have some strips and a meter to keep an eye on things.

Welcome to the foram , I'm new to so don't worry everyone here will try to help . It's the first time I've heard no hypos if taking metformin !!! I find I get something strange don't know if it's hypo or hyper if my sugars are out but as I have never been told how one feels , but I'm on metformin and believe me I suffer something

Hi welcome to the forum,

i have recently been diagnosed and on the low carb, Newcastle diet, there are many veggie recipes on here

Just a thought, but I am also trying to lose weight and I've got an app on my phone to track my calorie intake. Bonus is that it also breaks down what carbs I have too.

Came as a shock just how carb biased my diet was so I am trying to cut down as much as possible and cut out what I can.

Calorie counting is helping with portion control as required things to be weighed but despite being a bit inconvenient is helping me.

Of course different things work for different people, but this might help you too.
