Ok long story, I am type 2 and was very well controlled on diet only fell pregnant last year and was put on insulin I had a bad pregnancy and due to lots of issues I have been told that the pregnancy has accelerated the effect of diabetes on my body as much as 10 years (this was an expectional case I dont want to put diabetic people off trying to have a baby). Anyways I had a retinal screen previous ones have all been clear, but this time I received a letter saying "photographs of your eyes have now been reveiwed by an eye specialist and we would like to carry out further assessment at the hospital eye unit" "we will send an app"............. no other information, so I called the eye dept and they said they dont speak to anyone about treatment on phone due to confidently. My gp has not received any results yet and I feel quite scared about what this means I grew up seeing my beloved gran loose her sight in both eyes. If any one can shed some light on this would much appreciate this and maybe I will be able to relax (Freaking out) I have had a wee cry but just angry at the dept for not giving more info ..........please help

hypocrisy, prejudice and the corrupt legal system (never got compensation I deserved from an accident)
In this day and age where people sue at the drop of a hat if it were something serious they'd have you in straight away. I've read about others on here who have needed treatment and they're still going strong typing away without spelling mistakes so they must be seeing things alright!

Hi carb Foods
Jay, worry ye not. I had an even worse letter, threatening the possibility of lasers! On having my eyes checked with my specialist , he checked and rechecked then said "your eyes are BETTER than last year!! :p
Said that it was due to the tick box nature of the review i.e any change gets the doom & gloom letter.
Don't worry - wait for the real specialist's opinion not the "screener".

Thanks for the replies all, its nice to know there is someone you can understand the fear and frustration. Another question since having my daughter to be honest have been a little bit lax on the carb side. previosuly by low carbing bs would be below 7 easy now I have gone back on it again religiously but bs was 13.9 fasting and after breakfast of scrambled eggs and tea was 13.2 can anyone shed any light on this does it take come time for the bs to normalise and carbs to get out of system??
Any info would be much appreciated x

Please don't panic as others said it may just be background retinopathy and no treatment will be necessary.I have also read of people that have had similar letters but the specialist has found no problems on examination. Even if there is a problem treatments are good today and you cannot have had any problem for long
I'm not sure how high your glucose levels have been or if these readings are just a blip on changing diet, If it's just a blip then totally ignore the following.
If you had fasting levels of 13 mmol/l for some time or a higher HbA1c recently then it might be better not to try to bring your levels to 'non diabetic' levels too quickly. In other words don't try to drop an HbA1c of 9% to 6% overnight, do it gradually. The eyes are sensitive to sudden changes.
The Good Hope eye hospital in Birmingham advises on it's website that 'It is probably safer to lower the HbA1c gradually, over a year if necessary' . They also advise keeping your both blood pressure and cholesterol low .

I do hope you will get good news at the next appt.

I had background retinopathy for several years when my fasting BG was averaging 7, but since low carb there is no report of retinopathy. My average fasting BG is now below 6. Other conditions improved.

It is important to keep good control.
