Hello all

I am a type 2. I was recently given another oral glucose tolerance test to 'confirm' my diabetes. My fasting was still normal but my 2 hour result was 20!

I have been self-testing and eating a reduced carb diet. I have been able to keep my post meal levels under 7 (at 1 or 2 hours after eating). I eat around 100 gm carbs a day. However my doctor wants to put me on medication based on my GTT result. When I told him I am managing to control my sugars with diet alone he said he didn't believe me. I was hoping some of you might be able to tell me what your GTT results were and how many carbs you consume a day and how well your blood glucose is controlled. That would help me a lot. Thanks!

Oh Dear!
another one with a God complex
I can suggest you keep a food diary for a week and a record of your tests. If he still won't believe you, change your doctor.

Thanks Hanadr

It's just hard for me to trust myself and my little meter when my doctor (presumably) knows more about this stuff than I do.

Hi Laysan.

What Hana has said is very good advice. What your GP stated is unacceptable, what he knows.... :?: well we might have to just wait and see ?

Have you had an Hba1c test? This will show your average blood levels over the last 3 months. From this your doctor will be able to see how well you have been controlling your bg levels. If you have already had one done ask for the result.

i don't expect your Doctor is a diabetic, I am and you are. I know they do get lied to, but they shouldn't assume everyone is lying.
Your food diary and HbA1c will support you. I would ask for an apology when you have those to show in a couple of weeks.

Personally I would be surprised if there are many people out there who wouldn't get an elevated blood sugar reading two hours after ingesting 75g of pure glucose!

Yes it may well act as a test to indicate the development of Diabetes, but it has no bearing on your day to day functionality as a Diabetic. That is what the HbA1c is for.

Unless the HbA1c indicates that the Diabetes is dangerously uncontrolled, then diet should be the first port of call with another HbA1c taken three months later to see how well it is being controlled by that means.

I have parted company with my Diabetic 'Specialist' because quite frankly, I have lost faith in the man and have far more confidence in my own understanding of my own body and my own Diabetes.

Learn what you can about it all - the more you understand it, the more confidence you have to stand up for yourself.

You have come to the right place. The greatest benefit you can have is to follow a low-carb regime and ditching the extremely damaging gluten grain foods is by far the best thing you can do. Very few people out there realise the damage this awful stuff is doing to them. We all love bread, cakes and biscuits, but they don't love us.

Thank you all so much for your advice. I feel much more reassured now and will try to find someone who is more supportive of active patient involvement. It's hard to trust myself and my little meter when the 'experts' tell me I am wrong and damaging my health.

Your GP probably doesn't know anyone with post prandial blood sugars as high as 20 who CAN manage without medications. He also will not know anything better than scaremongering stories about low carb diets. You have the opportunity to show him what you can do. Bring in your record books and show him.
